In 2024, 308 Sasol employees pledged to dedicate a portion of their monthly salary, or contribute once-off fundraising donations, to support non-profit organisations in our communities. 🎉🙌🏾 🇿🇦💪🏾This aligns with the World Giving Index stating South Africans are among the most generous. We stand in the top 10% of countries with people willing to help strangers and volunteer their time. Being part of Sasol for Good, our employee volunteering and payroll giving initiative, has demonstrated this value of Care in action with Sasol matching each donation up to R10k. This week, I had the privilege of discussing Sasol for Good with Matebello Motloung (MBA), Group Media Relations Manager and MJ Khan, Head of Group Digital Communications. ✍️🏾🥹I left inspired by their insights on kindness, empathy and the importance of refocusing our efforts away from factors we cant control, prioritising what we can influence to create meaningful change.

Principal Specialist Process Engineer at Sasol

I don’t post often but I figured I’ll fail myself, if I didn’t at least acknowledge this. While looking through an old file, I stumbled across this almost 20-year-old letter which changed the course of my life. This letter hit home, and I started to reminisce about the interview day. Walking up to the venue at the University of Pretoria which was flourished with Sasol branding and surrounded by other students. I was so intimidated by the scene, my first thought, crap I don’t stand a chance here. As I made my way to the interview, while trying to psych myself up by reciting Eminem lose yourself, I was greeted by a group of 5 interviewers. At this point the nerves hit, my hands started to shake involuntarily, I couldn’t even make eye contact with the interviewers as I was trying to hold back the flood gates. I thought that was it, it’s over before it even began. I didn’t “drop bombs, I was choking”… Fortunately for me, one of the interviewer started with “Relax Ellain, the interview has not started yet. Tell me, where are you from?, how did you get here?”. To which I replied, “Durban, I travelled by bus with my mum”. He continued, “how was the trip?, what do you think of this place?”. I replied, “It felt long, this place is far. There were so many vehicles on the road, I just imagine how many people there are in the world”. The interviewers laughed and one person replied, “you’ll come to learn that the world is a big place Ellain, just waiting for you”. Guess that was the ice breaker, from there it became conversational, and I didn’t even realize how we transitioned into the interview. After that interview, I knew that this was a company which I wanted to work for, 20 years later that hasn’t changed and guess the rest is history… But I’ll never forget those interviewers, and I remain eternally grateful to them for taking a chance on me. “People will never forget how you made them feel”. “Opportunity is often missed, not because of who we are but because of who we think we are not”. Seize every opportunity that comes your way and the rest is up to you to follow through...
