The Nature Conservancy in Washington reposted this
Salmon populations are threatened around the world due to a variety of factors, including warming waters; their complex life cycles make it challenging to measure effects of restoration practices aimed at improving their population health. That's why I'm particularly excited about our paper out today: using a new integrated population model, we were able to show that restoration practices in forest and estuary ecosystems can help buffer negative effects from ocean warming. Thanks to Michele Buonanduci, PhD, for leading this paper; Eric Buhle, Michael Case, Emily Howe, James Robertson, and Nicholas VanBuskirk for coauthoring, Erica Sloniker for artwork, and The Nature Conservancy in Washington for supporting the work! Forests are vital to everyone, no matter where you live. They filter our water, clean our air, fight climate change by storing carbon, and support a wide variety of life. After decades of fire suppression in our Western forests, they are now facing a dangerous problem: catastrophic wildfire. That’s why our friends, The Nature Conservancy in New Mexico, are collaborating with partners to reintroduce “good fire” – or the right fire, in the right place, at the right time – to keep our forests healthy.
