This week, The Nature Conservancy in New Hampshire and The Nature Conservancy in Maine held our annual RT-130 wildland fire refresher day at the Wells Barrens Preserve. Staff and volunteers representing a number of organizations, agencies and partners from both states attended to brush up on their fire management skills, discuss lessons learned from the previous fire season, and practice important safety measures like deploying a fire shelter. All of this gets us prepared for utilizing controlled burns to manage the fire-dependent habitats we steward while enhancing public safety. 🔥 Learn more about how TNC in New Hampshire and Maine use fire to provide habitat and promote safety at https://nature.ly/3EhQOUO (📸: Megan Latour/TNC)

States across the U.S. are on a roll. They are reducing pollution and expanding clean energy. The federal government should be encouraging—not hindering—states’ ability to do so. Let’s not stop them now. https://nature.ly/43IsohH

ICYMI: 2025 marks the tenth anniversary of the #CityNatureChallenge! Hundreds of cities and thousands of participants have observed millions of species in what is now the world’s largest #CommunityScience event. We're hosting events in Dover, Manchester, Nashua and across the Mount Washington Valley this year (but you can participate no matter where you are). Between April 25 and 28, document the nature around you in the free iNaturalist app by taking photos of wild plants and animals—and help contribute to the world’s largest community science event. Plus, you can join us at some cool (and free!) events happening like the Nashua Sustainability Fair and a clean-up at Piscataquog River Park in Manchester. 📢 NEWS YOU CAN USE: 📢 The pitch pines at our Ossipee Pine Barrens Preserve are a prime target for southern pine beetles, which have been making their way north and wreaking havoc on pine forests along the way. But thanks to efforts spearheaded by our Land Management and Stewardship staff, these invasive beetles are being kept in check—and the forest here is being kept safe. Throughout the spring and summer, you may notice active management in portions of the preserve. Using techniques like controlled burns and tree-thinning, TNC New Hampshire and other teams can preempt potential damage in case the beetles arrive in enough numbers this year to infest trees in the Granite State. Currently, work is most active on 80 acres along Plains Road (Route 41) in Madison. After the tree-thinning operation is complete, TNC will follow up with a prescribed burn to create the conditions needed to encourage the next cohort of pitch pine and keep this forest safe and healthy. Keep up to date on what's up at the preserve at https://nature.ly/43LHjaT

🌊 Big news for marine conservation! 🌟 We’re excited to announce updates to TNC’s Northeast Marine Mapping Tool, designed to support decisions that help the plants and animals that call the Atlantic Ocean home. With enhanced data on critical habitats and the vulnerability of species, this tool now offers a holistic view of the marine ecosystem. By understanding what species live in specific ocean areas and identifying their key coastal habitats, the tool can help guide conservation efforts that improve outcomes for nature. 👉 Explore the updated tool and sign up for a workshop here: https://nature.ly/42hfhS9

We are so excited to welcome Carolyn Soule to the TNC family as our Associate Director of Development! Carolyn is a seasoned fundraising professional with over a decade of experience in the nonprofit sector in addition to holding a Master's Degree in Strategic Fundraising and Philanthropy. She is thrilled to join TNC, where she can blend her passion for nature with her expertise in donor relations and fundraising strategy. Prior to this, Carolyn spent three and a half years in fundraising at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Originally from New Hampshire's seacoast region, Carolyn has lived in Chicago and San Diego, but there's one thing that remains true—no nature compares to the stunning landscapes of New Hampshire (her words!). She's excited to return to her roots and bring her skills and enthusiasm to TNC’s important work. When she's not immersed in her professional passions, Carolyn can be found exploring the great outdoors, learning new baking skills, or enjoying a good cup of coffee while planning her next adventure. Please join us in welcoming Carolyn! 👏🏻 👏🏿 👏 (📸: Carolyn Soule)
