In 2023, Boise experienced one of its deadliest years for traffic crashes: 13 fatalities and 80 serious injury crashes. In response, a group of leaders representing the city of Boise, the Ada County highway district, the Boise police department, and Boise citizens formed the Vision Zero Task Force to decrease deaths on the road. One year later, we sat down with Bre Brush, the Mayor’s Transportation Advisor and a task force member, to see what’s been done since the group formed in late 2023. The holidays are a wonderful time to reconnect with family and friends. Too many holiday gatherings will be incomplete this year due to the tragic effects of impaired driving. Jennifer Zavala and her family have felt the impacts of a person's choice to drive while impaired. In our latest blog post, Jennifer shares the story of the day that changed her life and what she's doing to keep other families whole.

Did you know that animal-related collisions increase by roughly 30% between September and December? As animals move across highways in search of food and shelter, it’s important to stay alert and slow down—especially during dawn and dusk when they’re most active. A little extra caution goes a long way in keeping everyone safe 🫡

What's the best way to talk to teens about traffic safety? Meet them where they are. Duh. Teens in Idaho are 2.6 times more likely to be involved in a crash than drivers of any other age group. We have to do better. We've been in a lot of places serving up a lot of messages for teen driver safety week but these might be my favorites. They are sidewalk chalk installations we placed near high traffic areas for teens - these photos are near the stadium where most Boise high schools play their football games. The communication landscape is constantly changing - especially among young people. We have to be creative and innovative as we try to keep up - I'm proud to have a team that's willing to jump in and take risks! Right now, teens in Idaho are involved in a higher-than-normal percentage of fatal car crashes. Drivers between ages 15-19 are 2.6 times more likely to be in a crash than other drivers. Some sobering data from 2023 (in Idaho): 6,062 crashes involved a teen driver. 210 teen drivers were in suspected fatal and serious injury crashes. 40 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver. 11 teen drivers in fatal crashes were alcohol/drug impaired. 70% of the fatal crashes involving teen drivers occurred in rural areas. We believe our Idaho teens can do something about this. If you’re a parent of a teenager (or an ambitious teen already on LinkedIn)—our latest guide is for you. Give it a read: The Teen Driver’s Guide to Zero-Death Driving. Drive well, Idaho teens. ____ #shiftidaho #buckleup #teendriver #teendriversafetyweek

🚗 Teen Driver Safety Week is happening now🚦 No matter how you get around—driving, walking, biking, skooting, or hopping on the bus—it's a good move to practice safety first. Buckle up. 🚴Helmets on. 📴Phones down - unless you're on the bus! Did you know... Bus travel is 10 times safer than driving a car per mile traveled, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Public transit buses have much lower rates of accidents compared to private vehicles. Bus drivers are professionally trained to handle a wide range of road and weather conditions, contributing to the low accident rates of transit systems. Public transit reduces the risk of traffic accidents by more than 90% when compared to car travel, making it one of the safest modes of transportation available. It also reduces the number of teen driver accidents, as fewer teens need to be behind the wheel when they use buses to get to school or activities. 🚌 Teens, did you know? High school students in the Boise School District ride FREE when you show your student ID! It’s a good move to get around without the stress of driving. • Reduce the need to drive: Take the bus to school, work, or hangouts! • Less stress, more focus: Catch up on schoolwork or relax while we handle the driving. We have Wi-Fi onboard! • Safety first: Riding transit means less risk on the road, especially during those first years behind the wheel. 💵Plus save your cash for something other than gas! ⛽ What can we say- it's a Good Move. #TeenDriverSafetyWeek #TransitForTeens #GoodMove #RideVRT #SafetyFirst #RideTheBus
