Enhancing quality of life through transportation
About us
The state transportation system is inextricably woven into the fabric of Idaho life. The state's citizens use Idaho's transportation system to get to work, school, friends and recreation. They also rely on that system to bring goods to their stores, services to their doorstep, and to make sure the state's goods and services are delivered to the customers of the nation and the world. From the food they eat, to the letters they read, to the movies they drive to, Idahoans are empowered by transportation in complex and substantial ways. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has many opportunities for work variety and specialization. There are many careers to pursue at ITD including Engineering, Finance and Accounting, Human Resources, and more. Working for ITD includes a competitive benefits package as well as an excellent work life balance with options such as flex time. When Workforce Development Project Manager Mike and his son, Austin, came across a semi-truck crash on US-93, they didn’t hesitate to help. The wreck had just happened, and they quickly called EMS while assisting the couple inside. ITD crews from Carey and Arco soon arrived to lend a hand. For their efforts, Mike and Austin were awarded safety coins. Austin, a former ITD temp and now a Senior Airman in the U.S. Air Force, had just returned home to celebrate his 21st birthday. Great work by everyone involved! 👏

On February 10th, just before midnight, a woman pulled into the Northbound Port of Entry near Inkom, Idaho, and walked inside with an unexpected question: "Are you a police officer?" Port of Entry Inspector, Dalton wasn’t, but he knew something was wrong. She was alone, disoriented, and unsure how long she’d been on the road. Even more concerning? She had no phone, no cold-weather gear, and no access to her medications—including one for diabetes. She also mentioned that her daughter might have reported her missing. Dalton called for help, and it turned out to be a life-saving decision. Troopers and EMS arrived, confirmed she had been reported missing, and discovered her blood sugar was dangerously low. They rushed her to the hospital just in time. This could have ended so much worse—but because someone took the time to listen and act, she got the help she needed. We are so grateful to have Dalton on our team! A reminder that sometimes, being in the right place at the right time (and trusting your gut) can truly save a life.

Right place, right time, ready to help. While returning from Idaho Falls on March 6, Travis, Dan, and Ruth spotted a smoking car on I-84 near Declo. Within moments, the smoke thickened, and flames began to spread. Travis rushed to the vehicle and found an elderly woman inside, disoriented and unable to react. Acting fast, he carefully helped her out—just as fire engulfed the footwell. Dan worked to contain the flames with a fire extinguisher, while Ruth called 911 to get emergency responders on the way. This was a true team effort and a reminder that ITD employees do more than keep roads safe—we look out for the people who travel them. Whether clearing highways, responding to emergencies, or stepping up when someone is in need, we’re always ready to lend a hand. A big shout-out to everyone who was involved in this—your quick thinking and teamwork made all the difference! 👏

With the arrival of spring, ITD crews across the state are preparing to begin crack sealing, chip sealing, pothole filling, and other necessary repairs on Idaho's highways and Interstates. While such work is often a sore point for motorists, it's certainly better than the old days when roads weren't paved!

We’re always looking for ways to make our budget go further while keeping Idaho’s roads safe. This winter, our East Idaho foremen tested a new plow blade—and the results are impressive! It’s lasting 16 TIMES longer than our previous blades, saving $200,000 in replacement costs for next year. A huge THANK YOU to our innovative team for finding smarter solutions that keep Idaho moving while saving taxpayer dollars!

This St. Patrick’s Day, we’re celebrating with a little magic from Mother Nature—rainbows spotted by our employees across Idaho! Rainbows are a good reminder that Idaho weather can change fast! Sunshine can quickly turn to rain, and wet roads mean slower stopping times. Stay alert, drive safe, and enjoy the view!
