  • Over the years, the evolution of on-highway lubricants has been driven by one constant: adapting to change. According to Rob Banas Advisor at ExxonMobil, every major advancement in engine hardware and emissions control has reshaped how lubricants are formulated. From combating NOx emissions in the late ’90s with viscosity control under high soot loads to today’s lower-viscosity oils optimized for fuel efficiency, lubricants have had to keep pace with industry shifts. "Every major step change in emissions hardware has forced us to adapt," says Rob. "We work hand-in-hand with OEMs to understand what’s next and ensure engine oils evolve alongside these changes." For instance, in recent years, we’ve seen the transition from conventional mineral oils to synthetic and semi-synthetic base oils allow for longer drain intervals, better durability, and improved wear protection—without sacrificing performance. “Today, fleet managers now prioritize fuel economy more than ever, making lower-viscosity lubricants a strategic tool for cost control,” Rob says. “Innovation is inevitable, and the key is always staying ahead of change.”

  • Mining pros know every minute counts. When a mine shuts down, it costs millions of dollars per day in lost production. That’s why choosing the right lubricants is crucial to keeping equipment running smoothly, from engines and transmissions to hydraulics.     “As a lubrication engineer working directly with mining maintenance teams, I’ve seen firsthand how critical our lubricants are to reducing downtime and improving productivity,” says Abe Mitchell Lubrication Engineer.     The right lubricants play a vital role in maintaining the performance of the equipment that powers mining operations, whether that’s by reducing the frequency of maintenance or preventing unexpected equipment failures. In an industry where time is money, investing in high-quality lubricants is a game-changer – and it’s key to helping mines stay efficient and profitable.

  • On any construction site, machines do a lot of heavy lifting. Dozers, excavators, haul trucks, and paving equipment power productivity, but their performance depends on one key factor: the right lubrication strategy. Construction sites expose equipment to extreme temperatures, heavy loads, and constant dust and dirt. A poorly lubricated machine wears out faster, leading to costly downtime and repairs.   “Every construction fleet wants the same thing—maximized uptime and longer machine life,” says Rob Meldrum, Senior Lubrication Engineer at ExxonMobil. “But some companies need machines to last decades, while others operate on trade cycles and just need reliability for a set period. The lubrication plan has to fit the business model.” Most fleets own a lot of machines that come from multiple OEMs that each recommend different lubricants. This often leads to dozens of oils and greases on site, which raises costs and increases the risk of misapplication. A streamlined approach using the fewest correct lubricants simplifies inventory, reduces training complexity, and keeps preventive maintenance on track. “Choosing the right lubricants isn’t just about protecting engines and hydraulics,” Rob says. “It’s about protecting a project’s timeline and bottom line.” How does your operation manage lubricant complexity? Let us know in the comments below!

  • In the mining industry, lubricants are often seen as just a commodity, a necessary but unglamorous aspect of your maintenance program. Decisions often revolve around the price of the product – but the impact lubricants have on overall operations can be transformative and create real value for businesses.     As Peter Gunther, Regional Sales Manager, shared at MINExpo ‘24, a smart lubricant program can lower fuel costs, reduce maintenance needs, and improve overall productivity.     “A strategic partnership with lubricant providers can transform operations across the entire value chain,” Pete says. “Lubricants impact fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and sustainability—it’s not just about price.”     The future of mining is smarter, more efficient, and focused on paving the way for sustainability – and it starts with making the right choices in lubrication.
