It's not your fault. LinkedIn sucks.

It's not your fault. LinkedIn sucks.

Do you hate LinkedIn? Because I absolutely hate LinkedIn, and after spending a ton of time there these past few months, I'll break down why it sucks, what I'm doing about it, and what metric I care about more than anything right now.

So a little context: For SBX, our major marketing play at the moment is awareness. People literally have no idea we exist, and so we need to put a ton of energy into getting their attention. Part of my role in that is to be active on LinkedIn...or at least try.

The problem is that 95% of posts on LinkedIn are unwelcoming. They're all emoji filled thought leadership pieces with no room for discussion. So, while I do my best to naturally engage, the truth is that I've just been cramming likes and comments wherever I can for the sake of it. It sucks and I hate it.

So, recently I blew up.

It turns out everyone hates LinkedIn!

That was my best post by a mile. The most likes, comments, impressions—everything. The struggle to connect is real, and if you're feeling the same kind of exhaustion on LinkedIn, it's not just you.

So then the question becomes, what should we do about it? Stop posting like everyone else. Forget being super clean and curated. At some point it's not an advantage, it's a crutch.

For me, that means changing my profile picture from a boring headshot to a selfie at the Super Bowl. It means cracking jokes in the comments and posting strong opinions. It means being less corporate.

I can't tell you how much more I'm enjoying LinkedIn and seeing an increase in my most important metric: profile viewers.

Why profile viewers? Like I said before, my number 1 goal is awareness. I need people to know that me and my business exist. So what better proof of concept than someone clicking on my profile to learn more? It's a simple win.

So ask yourself: are you frustrated with LinkedIn? Are you having a hard time engaging? Do you enjoy posting? Does it reflect who you are? And if not, what can you do to make it better?

Think about it and, if we're not connected, shoot me an invite to connect.
