All I want is the freedom to choose!

All I want is the freedom to choose!

The overturn of Roe vs. Wade ruling is undeniably the most disturbing event to have occured in recent history. While we see millions of folks protesting and supporting this dark moment of the U.S. Supreme court taking away a fundamental human right, it saddens me to see how deeply embedded are the roots of patriarchy, that at every step has tried to control a woman's freedom.

I was first introduced to Roe Vs. Wade in one of my Biomedical Ethics and Law class back in 2015, when I was pursuing my masters in Biomedical Engineering. I remember spending endless hours researching this landmark decision (1973), in which the U.S. Surpeme Court ruled that the constitution protects a pregnant's women liberty to choose to have an abortion. As a part of the class project, we were given a task to figure what our stance is : pro-life or pro-choice.  I could'nt help thinking to myself back then, the inherent guilt associated with the word 'pro-life' : a women's guilt that this patriarchal society really knows how to encash upon. If I choose *not* to be a mother for whatever reasons, does it really make me  anti-life? Why does my personal choice on what I decide to do with my body bother this misogynist society so much that they do everything in their power to try to control it!

Women face an unrealistic responsibility and burden when it comes to reproductive rights! Let's start with family planning. The first question that comes to my head - Why are men missing in family planning? A finding in a recent study published in the International Journal of Community Medicine and Public Health stated : The uptake of male contraception methods remains constant and low. Specifically in India, men continue to shy away from their responsibility when it comes to family planning because it's largely viewed as a women's issue. Female sterilization accounts for as much as 75% of the modern family planning adopted by Indians. The origin of this skew lies in the fact that government and social programmes on family planning have focussed largely on women to adopt contraception.

First you make family planning solely a women's responsibility and now with making abortion illegal you have transformed her into a puppet whose strings lie in the hands of men. Nothing screams patriarchy more loudly!

Here is an idea, instead of making abortion illegal, why don't we start with making vasectomies mandatory for all men and, when they choose to start a family in consensus with thier partner, they can alway go ahead and reverse it (yes it reversible). I wonder how many men out there simply got uncomfortable with this statement! How does it feel when you don't have the right to choose what you want to do with your body!

It's a dark and sad day in the war of equality. Taking away a woman's reproductive freedom threatens the right to control one's destiny. While the end of the right to abortion is limited to United States, this will have devastating consequences around the world.

Anti-abortion law is not a America only problem, this is a global attack on women's fight for equality!

Remember the mission of unbias.me is to share and learn from each other. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
