It was great to speak to The Independent to share findings from research I commissioned for the Early Education and Chimdcare Coalition. We are seeing a significant drop in the numbers of people becoming childminders whilst many are leaving the sector. The patterns have been there for some time but appear to be getting worse. It’s way past time that we have a national workforce strategy for early education and childcare to ensure that these skilled professionals are able to remain and thrive in these vital roles. #earlyeducation #childcare #workforce #childminders
One of our Directors Lucie Stephens spoke to The Independent this week to share research on the critical decline of childminders and the impact this will have on children and families https://lnkd.in/emyeu24r #earlyeducation #childcare #childminders

Every child should be guaranteed at least three days per week of early childhood education for free, or at a low-cost fee of around $10 a day for households with a combined income of $80,000 or more. That’s according to recommendations outlined by policy think tank the Centre for Policy Development. The recommended reforms aim to reposition Australia’s Early Childhood Education and Care system as being similar to school or Medicare, where all children have access and those who need greater support receive it. #earlychildhoodeducation #childcare

What are the challenges faced by councils seeking to provide children with the best start? 🧒 Councillor louise gittins writes that to provide children with the best start in life, councils’ early years teams need to be adequately resourced by government to be able to provide support to their local childcare sector and directly support children, young people, and families. Addressing the challenges in implementation and pressures on providers and councils, Gittins provides an overview of the historic underfunding and pressures which have seen staff numbers fall and an acceleration in providers closing. In her call for systematic reform, she empahsises the need to balance quality and sufficiency. The rising expenses of child care and its limited accessibility are creating added pressure for caregivers and working parents across the country. In 2023, an Annie E. Casey Foundation Kids Count® report revealed that 13% of children under 5 lived in households where caregivers had to change jobs due to childcare issues. These transitions resulted in a staggering $122 billion annual loss for the U.S. economy, leading to reduced earnings, productivity, and tax revenue. As a parent, the time spent with my family brings so much joy, and knowing they have reliable caregivers provides a sense of security. Yet, for many families, the cost for childcare now exceeds the cost of rent, making it harder for parents to save, invest, or plan for the future. With American families spending an average of nearly 19% of their income on childcare, many parents face tough choices between working or staying home. It’s time to prioritize affordable childcare nationwide so families can fully invest in their futures. https://lnkd.in/etxr9gbj
