As an organizational leader, if you can’t clearly state what your vision is, then your subordinates most assuredly have no idea, and are probably not working to achieve it. What is your WHY? What is all the effort supposed to add up to? Do you know where you are going, why you must get there and can you tell anyone? Without a shared vision to focus on, people develop and protect what is individually important. With vision, leadership decisions begin to make sense, management becomes easier, and employees are more engaged because they understand the WHY. He gives a great example of mission command; training your team to be able to step up to the point where you are redundant in day to day operations.  Outside the military I think we often see the reverse, where leaders hoard responsibility instead. It takes confidence to let go and trust your team. Effective leadership isn't about being the MVP on your team, it's about enabling the team to shine.

A great summation of how important a clear and well communicated vision is to the effectiveness of any endeavour.

I bet many of you have read “Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win” by former Navy SEAL officers Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. The book is a fascinating blend of leadership lessons drawn from combat and applied to business. I highly recommend it. The central idea? Leaders must take full responsibility for everything that happens under their command—no excuses, no blaming others. If something goes wrong, a leader must own it and work to correct it. "There are no bad teams, only bad leaders" This statement in the book caught my attention, and I suspect it resonates with you as well. Willink and Babin assert that leaders are responsible for the performance of their teams. If a team is underperforming, it’s up to the leader to identify the problems, develop a plan, and guide the team to success. I see this principle at work in the marketplace, in sports, and everywhere leadership is exercised. But what about the church? Are there no bad churches, only bad pastors? I have read this book twice now. “There are no bad teams only bad leaders”. The concepts in this book are simple, make sense, but also make you take an introspection, on your leadership style and help identify what need to be done to be a good leader. This book makes you reflect in the decisions you make daily.

I recommend this book to anyone seeking a leadership position in their company. It is not just about being in the military. The lessons apply to all areas of leadership.

Recently I finished to read Extreme Ownership book. The main idea of this book is that true leadership means taking full responsibility for everything within your domain. Instead of blaming others or external factors, effective leaders own their actions and outcomes. A must-read for anyone looking to enhance their leadership skills and drive real results! Thank you for the first review of my book on leadership and it's a good one from a retired infantry colonel and Vietnam veteran: "The book addresses the key aspects of leadership whether in a military or civilian role. It highlights the fundamental aspects of the key areas of leadership-desire to be a leader, character, sacrifice, leading by example, discipline and team building to name a few areas addressed in the book. It is well worth anyone's time to read, reflect and apply if in a leadership/management role or studying leadership. I wish I had this book for study reference when I was first commissioned as an Army officer, it is that good. I believe every newly promoted soldier going into the non-commissioned or officer ranks be provided a copy or at least the book be put on a recommended reading list. I highly recommend the book!"
