Recently I finished to read Extreme Ownership book. The main idea of this book is that true leadership means taking full responsibility for everything within your domain. Instead of blaming others or external factors, effective leaders own their actions and outcomes. A must-read for anyone looking to enhance their leadership skills and drive real results! Leadership Thought #3 "I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles, but today it means getting along with people". These words of Mahatma Gandhi align with my own observation that each generation understands leadership in different ways. As a child I saw leaders as people at the top of companies, military generals, and leading politicians in nations. They seemed to be people who had power at their disposal which might be thought of as "muscles" and relationships with others were transactional and according to a recognized structure. Today those kind of leaders still exist but more prevalent are leaders who lead through influence and relationship with others. I recommend this book to anyone seeking a leadership position in their company. It is not just about being in the military. The lessons apply to all areas of leadership.

I do like this, I think it is brilliant for organisational leadership, short and to the point. There also many cross overs with followership as written in the followership Doctrine note (linked below), particularly with regard to what leaders are and know. I am frequently asked for book recommendations on leadership, and the first one that I ALWAYS make is "Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win" by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. While I am not a perfect leader, I continue to develop on my journey to be great. The principles of this book that have become my north star are that leaders must take full responsibility for their team's outcomes, there are no bad teams, only bad leaders, check your ego at the door, keep the plan simple, and discipline equals freedom. Do you want to be a better leader? First learn how to follow. In the military, if you cannot follow orders, it is unlikely you will ever move up the chain of command. As it should be (but isn't always) in business. If a person cannot follow orders, it will be difficult for them to understand how others need to follow orders. If a person cannot follow orders, they have a disdain for authority and think their way is always the best. That attitude applies to subordinates as well as authority figures. Start first by being a follower, then learn how to lead by expecting that same commitment from those following you...so they can better learn to lead others. Of Course, not everyone can be good at both leading and managing. Some people have the capacity to become excellent managers but not strong leaders. Others have great leadership potential but, for a variety of reasons , have great difficulty becoming strong managers. Consider a simple MILITARY ANALOGY : a peacetime army can usually survive with good administration and management up and down the hierarchy, coupled with good leadership concentrated at the very top. A wartime army, however, needs competent leadership at all levels. No one yet has figured out how to manage people effectively in to battle; they must be led. Good management brings a degree of order and consistency to key dimensions like the quality and profitability of products. Leadership by contrast, is about coping with change. #leadership #management
