💼 Leadership is about people, not just profits. 💼 In a world where financial gain often takes center stage, it's refreshing to see leaders who prioritize their team's well-being over personal profit. Charles Barkley just turned down a staggering $100 million contract—why? To ensure the jobs of his TNT Sports colleagues were secure for another year. This isn't just a story about sacrifice; it's a lesson in values-driven leadership. In an era where we often hear about layoffs and cost-cutting, Barkley reminds us that great leaders make decisions that reflect their principles, even when it’s difficult. 🌟 Key Takeaways: - People First: True leadership focuses on the team. Barkley’s decision underscores the importance of valuing your people above all else. - Long-Term Vision: It's not just about the money today—it's about building a sustainable and positive culture for the future. - Integrity in Action: Barkley’s move is a powerful example of how integrity can guide decision-making, even in the face of lucrative offers. Imagine the impact if more leaders followed Barkley’s example. How would our workplaces, and indeed our world, change for the better? Let’s take a page from his book and remember that our teams are our greatest assets. This will be an interesting one to watch. Replacing a CEO with a 3-headed Office of the CEO leadership structure while navigating business performance challenges, delicate merger discussions, and board drama certainly goes against conventional wisdom. We have seen examples where co-CEO leadership can work effectively, but under very specific conditions. These usually involve situations that require uniquely complementary strengths from each leader coupled with absolute clarity around who owns what to ensure decision making does not grind to a halt. The added complexity of a triumvirate model where each leader remains on the hook for delivering results for their own divisions creates a fascinating new test for enterprise leadership that will demand deep trust, alignment, and mutual accountability. With Larry Ellison taking the helm and bringing in Jeff Shell, former head of NBC, we’re seeing a strategic move that recognizes the importance of understanding both the studio and network sides of the business, including sports and streaming, as Michael J. Wolf discussed previously. Paramount's challenge has been a lack of investment and creative leadership. This new leadership team could be the catalyst to revitalize Paramount's strategic direction and growth. Aligning resources to foster innovation and make bold investments in content and technology will help companies stay competitive. 🎥 Josh Allen: Insights on Leadership (PART 2) During the second half of this interview, the media asked Josh about his leadership and that of others. I've included the link to the video clip, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Here are my key takeaways: REFLECTION, HUMILITY, GROWTH MINDSET, and a CULTURE OF INCLUSION AND DEVELOPMENT: Josh's comments revealed his clarity about his leadership role and the impact he makes, emphasizing that the entire team shows up as leaders: "I learned that it is not just the leaders that matter, it takes everyone, it takes a whole village, and that is why we kind of have the leadership council that we do. Obviously, me and TB being the only ‘captains’ on this team, but we weren’t the only captains. There’s a lot of guys in this locker room that everyone looks up to and respects. Their voice matters, and I’m just fortunate to have the guys that we did. It took a village to get the right messaging out and to get everyone to buy in and believe, but I think we did that this year." EMBRACING NEW TALENT: The way Josh talked about the rookies was incredible. Do we incorporate and lift up our “rookies” in business? "You didn’t feel like they were rookies all that much… Ray Davis—the hammer, Keon making some spectacular plays, and fun to work with him, and noted defensive rookies as well." And here was the key: "Keep incorporating them and make sure we are developing them the right way and just try to get back on track for next year." PRIORITIZING REFLECTION: The day after the game, being asked what you learned can be difficult. Josh acknowledged this, yet he was clearly reflecting every day as seen in his response: "I don’t know if I can answer that honestly, not quite sure if I did. I am still working, still trying to be the best that I can be, a lot to learn from, obviously this season…" Josh discussed his key focus for this season—making good decisions and turning the ball over less, saying: "I think we did a great job of that..." In business, creating time for reflection is crucial. We don't have an off-season to watch film and prioritize specific skills, but Josh and his team make full use of that time. The impact on them as people and in their game is evident. How can we make reflection a priority in business? How are you doing that? Massive respect for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Let’s take a page from their playbook and prioritize reflection, growth, and inclusive leadership in our own fields. 💪🔴🔵

Sports and business have a lot in common and especially so when you think of the types of leadership that drive success. I've been watching more football this season of my University of Colorado Boulder Buffaloes, it's been very interesting to see what Deoin Sanders has accomplished in such a short time. Yes he is polarizing, but so was Bobby Knight. There is no singular way to being a good leader, it is about surrounding yourself with the right people that buy into THAT vision. As an example, Deoin is very vocal, but holds himself and his team accountable. If you've watched these games, you see the coaches and the players do the exact same thing. They are VOCAL. It's about holding themselves and their peers accountable relative to the plan. This lets coaches focus on other factors beyond mentoring / coaching individual players to adjust the plan as needed (sports just like business is about starting within and looking outwards). The Buffs this year have adjusted amazingly well at half when they re-group , re-plan, and re-align on what needs to happen in the final 30 minutes. BTW, if this sounds like Netflix you're right, it sure does. Hire top talent, let them do what they're good at, and be candid at all levels in the right way (4A approach). I'm excited to see what this team has in store for the rest of this year and future seasons under #coachprime. Your leadership style has been entertaining and effective. The National Football League (NFL) needs no introduction. Thanks to high-stake media deals and a big push into building a global fanbase, the NFL has built the world’s largest sports league — valued at $163 billion across its 32 teams, according to Forbes. Its lead in the industry is the result of careful business branding, exclusive sponsorships, expanding the interests of an already massive audience, and adjusting to the changing landscape of the sport. In the 2023-24 season alone, the NFL partnered with 48 brands, holding top deals with EA SPORTS, Nike, and Verizon, while generating over $11 billion from broadcasters, including Peacock, Amazon, and ESPN, according to GlobalData. The 2024 Super Bowl also became the most-watched television program in US history. However, the NFL wouldn't exist, much less be the powerhouse it is today, without the league’s nearly 1,700 players. Troy Vincent is the one who is looking out for them on the field. As Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Vincent heads player development and oversees new and, at times, risky rules to a game loved and watched by millions, with one goal in mind — building on the success of the NFL through investing in its players. The movie is based on real events, telling the story of Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics, and his assistant Peter Brand. Facing a tight budget, they used computer analytics to assemble a team that became the first in 100+ years of American League baseball history to win 20 consecutive games ⚾ Key insights from the movie: 📽️ In sports, as in business, there's never enough money – work with what you have. 📽️ Limited resources call for creative approaches. 📽️ For a strategy to work, the whole team must understand it, believe in it, and implement it step by step. 📽️ "Many are called, few are chosen," as the Announcer says in the movie. 📽️ "I know you’re taking it in the teeth out there, but the first guy through the wall, he always gets bloody. Always," as John Henry says in the movie, reminding us about the challenges faced by pioneers. Have you watched this film?
