Leprosy: Highly Contagious? 🤔 Let’s Set the Record Straight Continuing our discussion on leprosy myths, today I want to address a common misconception. I wasn't surprised when someone told me that leprosy is highly contagious and that's why patients are isolated. Leprosy is highly contagious?? How true is that? FACT: Leprosy, or Hansen's disease, is not highly contagious. It spreads through prolonged close contact with an untreated person, not casual touch. Once treated, patients are no longer contagious. 🩺 The Reality: Leprosy has a long incubation period, making it less likely to spread quickly. Modern treatment with multidrug therapy (MDT) is effective and stops contagion. Historically, patients were isolated due to the lack of effective treatment and fear of the disease, but this is no longer necessary with modern medicine. Additionally, 95% of people are naturally immune to leprosy, which further reduces its spread. 🤝 What Can We Do? Raise Awareness: Spread the truth about leprosy. Support Initiatives: Help organizations that provide diagnosis and treatment. Combat Stigma: Promote empathy and understanding. By sharing accurate information, we can reduce stigma and fear, helping those affected receive the care they need. Stay tuned for pictures of my visit to a leprosy centre in my next post! #HealthAwareness #Leprosy #MythBusting #GlobalHealth #Healthcare #Nurse #Nurse_educator

Nearly one-third (32%) of parents with a child under 18 mistakenly believe that it’s fine for a child with celiac disease to eat food served at birthday parties, snacks after their sports team game, and other special occasion situations even though it is not gluten-free because it’s not a daily occurrence. 🤔 *Note that no one with celiac should ever eat gluten, regardless of the severity of their symptoms, nor the special occasion. To gain a better understanding of the knowledge and perceptions that Americans have about pediatric celiac disease, Beyond Celiac commissioned The Harris Poll to conduct a 2024 national benchmarking survey. The Harris Poll on behalf of Beyond Celiac was conducted nationwide January 9-11, 2024, among 2,074 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.
