Despite its prevalence, there are many myths and misconceptions surrounding pneumonia. In this article, we will aim to debunk these myths and provide facts about pneumonia, its risk factors, treatment options, and when to seek expert opinion or hospitalization. Myth 1: Pneumonia only affects older adults Fact: Pneumonia can affect anyone, regardless of age. However, certain age groups are at higher risk, including: - Children under 2 years - Adults 65 years and older Myth 2: Pneumonia is always contagious Fact: Not all types of pneumonia are contagious. However, some types like bacterial pneumonia can be spread through: - Direct contact with an infected person - Indirect contact through contaminated surfaces or air Myth 3: Antibiotics always work for pneumonia Fact: Antibiotics only work for bacterial pneumonia, not viral pneumonia. Overuse or misuse of antibiotics can lead to resistance. Myth 4: Pneumonia is a mild illness Fact: Pneumonia can range from mild to severe and even life-threatening, especially in high-risk groups.
