#Spotlight moment on Daniel Shedo, Civil Engineer at MassDOT Daniel Shedo started his journey at MassDOT in the summer of 2022 as an intern at Highway Design HQ. After successfully completing a 3-month internship, he was offered a full-time job opportunity. “Since joining MassDOT in June 2023, I have been actively involved in designing highway projects. I also review various jobs to ensure compliance with MassDOT standards. This includes field visits for data collection and other assigned tasks which are part of my responsibilities. I was inspired to pursue my career as a civil engineer by my older brother, who is also a civil engineer. The conversations between my brother and friends during my childhood had a significant impact on my career choice. Additionally, my best friend's passion for engineering and technology serves as a daily inspiration. I consider publishing a research paper in an international journal as one of my proudest accomplishments right now. I am humbled by the depth and breadth of knowledge accumulated at MassDOT The team consists of incredibly intelligent individuals who are doing an outstanding job. I am particularly impressed by MassDOT's commitment to embracing advanced technology in our industry. The management is not afraid to explore new procedures and technologies that can simplify tasks for employees and enhance efficiency. Since my time as an intern, numerous technological advancements have been introduced, such as the AI chatbot currently in the testing phase. This chatbot has the potential to significantly reduce the time spent searching through various guides and manuals. I have been part of so many exciting initiatives and I am grateful to the leadership for their proactive approach. We are daily reminded of the importance of ensuring that our infrastructure is accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities. This week, I had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in geotechnical fieldwork, performing Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) and wash boring to collect soil and rock samples. These techniques are crucial for understanding subsurface conditions, which directly inform foundation design and ensure safety in construction projects. 🔍 SPT Testing allowed us to assess the soil’s relative density and strength, providing valuable insights into the site's suitability for various structures. Using the wash boring method, we efficiently drilled through the soil layers, allowing for detailed sampling and classification. Working closely with experienced engineers in the field has deepened my understanding of site investigation techniques and reinforced my passion for geotechnical engineering. I would like to share a few things about my experience being an engineering intern at PennDOT. I learned many lessons and gained knowledge firsthand. Some of the main responsibilities I was assigned this summer as an engineering intern with PennDOT were completing project site activities, communicating with contractors, conducting wage rate interviews, and creating Excel sheets to encapsulate quantities. The most effective skill I used this summer was communication. In the construction world, I have come to find that people often use different slang and jargon. Being clear and concise while also asking questions has been the answer for me. A technical skill I used the most this summer was interpreting construction drawings. I utilized this skill to understand the job being completed by the contractor and to ensure the job was put in according to standard. My key takeaway from this experience was learning the relationship between contractors and engineers. Getting an insight into the vast work completed by both sides to ensure a great product. #udaytoncoopintern University of Dayton School of Engineering
