TSA Manager at The Survey Association (TSA)

Today’s informative webinar on Geospatial Apprenticeships, led by Lucy Powers BA (Hons), MBA, FInstCES, Co-Chair of the Trailblazer Group, provided valuable insights into the geospatial surveying apprenticeships. Lucy highlighted how these apprenticeships play a crucial role in raising industry standards and ensuring competence. The qualifications are specifically designed for geospatial surveyors, covering the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for a successful career in the sector. Cronton College (Widnes, North West) and Dudley College (West Midlands) are now accepting students for a September 2025 start. Employers are encouraged to connect with the colleges early to access support and secure apprentices. Progression opportunities are also clear—those completing the Level 3 apprenticeship can advance to a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship, continuing their professional development. Apprenticeships offer a cost-effective way to train staff, with significant government funding available to support employers. Land, topographic and engineering surveyor at Powers Geospatial

I am proud to share that last week and earlier this week, I was in a team of 6 who carried out topographical survey of close to 12 hectares of land in Lancashire and established third order control network within it, courtesy of Powers Teamwork, dedication, tenacity are among the soft skills coupled with technical skills that made the project a success. In the picture attached, I was performing a routine check on the GNSS Rover to ensure errors due to cycle slips and multi-paths are reduced to the minimal before XYZ values of points are taken. #powersuk #survey #surveying #surveylife

It is my hope that all entry level geospatial surveyors will study a level 3 in geospatial surveying and the L3 Geospatial Surveying Technician Apprenticeship in particular. Powers are in their fourth year of running a sustainable geospatial apprenticeship scheme and it’s going from strength to strength. Not only are we bringing our apprentices learning in-house, we’re enabling our apprentices to become qualified in this specialist subject without them incurring massive debt at the same time. Now we just need a L6 geospatial degree apprenticeship to complete the work/study route for some of our more ambitious surveyors, but all of this depends on employers like us saying yes and committing to employing apprentices. Come on my fellow survey companies, let’s put our money where our mouth is and start employing more geospatial apprentices so that colleges and universities can be sure that this is a viable entry route into the profession. If you want to know more, there is a webinar on the 26th March where I will be talking about how we run our apprenticeship scheme. I can answer all of your questions so please DM me if you want to be added to the guest list. #apprenticeships #workandstudy #geospatialsurveying #surveying #qualifications #learnwhileyouwork

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁’𝘀 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝘁𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘀 This time last week, our Project Manager Shams Malik attended the Place North West's Emerging Development Hotspots 2025 event, where local government and industry leaders outlined the key areas set for regeneration across the region. 🔍 Key takeaways from the speakers: Paul Richards, Stockport Council – £600m investment in Stockport, delivering 170,000 sq ft of Grade A office space, 3,000 new jobs, and a new health model to improve local services. Kathy McArdle, Chester & Cheshire West Council – The One City Plan (OCP) is shaping a healthier, greener, and fairer Chester. Major projects include Northgate 1 & 2, City Gateway, and a £13m transformation of Ellesmere Port with 182 new homes, with a framework for SMEs expected in autumn 2025. Nuala Gallagher, Liverpool City Council – A joint approach between Liverpool City Council and Sefton Council is driving regeneration in North Liverpool, supported by vision & delivery frameworks, SPDs, and developments at Pumpfields & Pall Mall. The discussions also highlighted the role of Homes England in smoothing out project delivery by working closely with councils and the Department for Transport to secure funding and overcome viability challenges. With so many transformational projects on the horizon, Powers is ready to support clients in navigating the geospatial and infrastructure challenges that come with major regeneration schemes. 📩 Get in touch to discuss how we can support your next project. 🌐 www.powersuk.com 📧 info@powersuk.com 📞 0161 207 0701 #powers #geospatialconsultants #surveying #geomatics #northwestdevelopment #placenorthwest #regeneration #urbanplanning #construction #projectmanagement #civilengineering #architecture

Powers was commissioned by Peel Ports Group to carry out a topographic survey at Port Salford, a vital inland port and multimodal distribution park. Our survey provided essential data to assist with future development plans, enabling construction work to begin. One of the key challenges was ensuring that the topographical data accurately aligned with the existing ground conditions, avoiding potential delays in the phased construction process. Our precise surveying ensured a seamless transition from planning to execution. “The team provided a professional service, delivering a high-quality topographic survey and setting out in line with the project’s requirements.” – Peel Ports Group The project will be delivered in phases, with the client hopeful for full completion by 2038. 📍 Read the full case study: https://lnkd.in/ec8jCuYe #powerssurveying #topographicalsurvey #geospatialconsulting #surveyingsolutions #portsandharbours #logistics #transportinfrastructure #supplychain #maritimeindustry #landdevelopment #surveyingdata #ukconstruction #infrastructureplanning #engineeringdesign #projectmanagement #architecture #civilengineering

Preston itself is seeing a wave of regeneration, and the discussions covered key developments, including the Samlesbury Enterprise Zone, Silicon Sands, and the transformation of Blackpool from a seasonal worker hub into a year-round employment destination. Lancashire is buzzing! Education was a central theme throughout the presentations - lifelong learning, the rise of the Multiversity (an education model embracing adult learning), and T2000, a training provider championing apprenticeships, which aligns closely with our company’s values. Cybersecurity also took centre stage, with Dan Prince from Lancaster University highlighting the university’s collaboration with six other North West institutions - three of which are Centres of Excellence in Cyber Security. His insights were so compelling that I found myself texting my son, telling him Lancaster Uni should be top of his list after A-Levels if he wants to be at the heart of it all! I’ll let you in on a secret… I actually thought Rachel Reeves' goal for growth could be easily achieved here - there’s so much happening in Lancashire. Yes, the start of 2025 has felt slow, with economic uncertainty leading to hesitation. But as John Chesworth pointed out, despite the turbulence, inflation is steadying, interest rates were cut yesterday, and partnerships between the public sector, private sector, and education are the way forward to drive development and regeneration. The future is looking brighter. Great to meet so many new people: Patrick Hickey, Charlotte Leach, Andrew Dakin, Gary Hall, Lee Parry, Barry Cleminson, Joe Morgan, Stuart Sage, Dan Jackson, Dan Gosling, and Darren Coar.
