The 28th day compressive strength of concrete should no longer be the measuring parameter in defining the quality of high rise structures due to use of machineries and changed placing conditions of concrete.The delays in getting a quality feedback handicap the Site Engineers to enforce a strict quality plan. Our campus is well equipped to provide the best facilities to groom students to meet the challenges in current environment as per specific requirements of construction companies. Internships for students after fourth semesters are always welcome from industries. It's quite possible to predict the fire dynamics of existing structures through finite element methods so as to make structures fire safety intelligent .

6 years ago, I was starting my college career. 6 years ago, I was moving into a college dorm to start my first year of full-time engineering coursework. I knew at the time that I wanted to pursue civil engineering, but had no idea what I wanted to do with my degree. I took a variety of classes, had a variety of jobs on campus within the engineer departments, and took on mulitple internships. It wasn't until I heard Michael Dukes, P.E. give a presentation about bridge inspection that something inside me clicked - Bridge Inspection. Structures. Field work. Project management. Load ratings. And so much more. That's what I wanted. To all of the college students who are still trying to figure out what you want - try everything. Once you find your passion, everything else will fall into place.

🌟 First Week Update – Internship at ZKB engineering and construction | Yellow Line Project 🌟 Excited to share my progress from the first week of my internship at ZKB, where I’m actively contributing to the construction of the new Jam Sadiq Bridge under the Yellow Line project. This experience has been a remarkable opportunity to apply my academic knowledge in the field and enhance my understanding of structural engineering practices. Here’s what I’ve learned so far: 🔹 Piling Process: Observed the process of placing casing and liners and the initial steps of boring for piles based on the borelog and soil report. Gained key insights into the importance of completing the piling process immediately after boring to prevent bore collapse. 🔹 Steel Cage Lowering & Pile Foundation: Learned the critical steps for lowering the steel cage, ensuring proper placement of U-joints and supports to avoid mishaps. Ensured pile lap lengths (2.5m) and precise spiral reinforcement spacing during cage inspection. 🔹 Concreting with Tremie Pipes: Observed the efficient execution of pile concreting through tremie pipes, understanding the importance of continuous and controlled placement. 🔹 Pier Shaft Installation: Assisted in the process of lowering the pier shaft steel cage and ensuring accurate formwork placement. 🔹 Key Takeaways: ✔️ The importance of quick, accurate execution in the piling process. ✔️ Attention to detail during reinforcement placement to maintain structural integrity. ✔️ Collaboration and coordination among teams for successful project milestones. ✔️ A major realization: The backbone of every project is the labor force. Their skill, hard work, and dedication are the driving factors behind a project’s success. They are the real superheroes making everything possible on-site! This week has been a fantastic blend of learning, hands-on practice, and professional growth. Looking forward to the weeks ahead and diving deeper into this incredible project!

MEET THE INTERNS! Name: Liath Lenihan Role: Student Civil/Structural Engineer Department: Civil/Structural Engineering College Degree: Civil Engineering in Munster Technological University (Kerry Campus) Hobbies: Football and Running Favourite project and why? My favourite project I have been involved in so far is a large three phase housing development in Limerick, which is currently still in the design stage. I really enjoy working on this project as you get to see many different aspects of the work involved. Working with a skilled group of structural engineers, I have aided in designing some of the structural elements for this housing development. I have enjoyed this project a lot as I have been involved in it since the beginning so I’m seeing it move through the different design stages. This project allowed me to become familiar with new calculation software. Experience gained so far: During my work experience so far in MWP, I have learned how to put information learned in college into real life projects while also learning new information from the engineers here in MWP. I have learned how to use new software such as Tekla Tedds that I otherwise mightn’t have seen till after finishing my degree. I have learned how to complete new tasks and calculations that I wouldn’t have done previously, this is with the help of the team of engineers. Most challenging and rewarding aspect of your role: The most challenging aspect of my role at MWP is adjusting from college to my first professional role in engineering. When beginning placement there is a big learning curve and lots of new information to digest. Once you begin projects and put the information to use, it gives a rewarding feeling of accomplishment for completing new tasks. Aims for the next few years: My aim for the next few years is to finish my degree in Civil Engineering in MTU. After that I would like to carry on my studies in a master’s programme. My time here on placement is helping me decide on what area I would like to complete my master’s programme in. Due to having the attention span of a pencil, I haven't yet completed the Civil Engineering Work Experience provided by Springpod and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) 😔 However, even at 40% through with it I have learned SO MUCH I didn't know. Biomimicry and the integration of natural systems into infrastructure to increase adaptability and accelerate progress to a sustainable future? That using Green Roofs on flat roofs could save up to 26% in energy consumption and save 30M gallons of water from stormwater runoff (figure from NY study)? ⛈️ That Kinetic Surfaces were even a thing, and that they could HARNESS THE ENERGY OF YOUR FOOTSTEPS IN A PIEZOELECTRIC MANNER AND CONVERT IT INTO ELECTRICITY??? ⚡ That Self-healing Cement consists of bacteria that produce LIMESTONE when in contact with water thereby plugging up cracks due to disrepair? 🩹 I am currently still in secondary school 🎓 and am amazed that none of these practical and awe-inspiring innovations have been presented to students. This leads me on to a tangent point, students are not educated enough on their future. Yes we have career evenings and assemblies, but no one ever talks about what happens after sixth form and college... Gap years? Apprenticeships? Internships? University? Before delving into career pathways to further expand my knowledge into the unknown, I had no idea what any of these things even meant. And this is the problem, by the time students like me ARE educated, or have educated THEMSELVES on such topics, it may already be too late; leading to a hurried and potentially stressful choosing of paths. Perhaps its just me but I'm pretty sure myself 1 year ago would go to any lengths for such knowledge; but then again maybe its an info hazard, with a correlation between stress and information 🤷♂️ Obviously I speak from 0 experience of post-college life.
