What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a military pilot.  Among my many dreams as a boy, I thought the most realistic was to become a pilot. I love airplanes. I remember reading about various planes, from the SR-71 Blackbird, A-10 Warthog, and the Concorde, but the F-14 Tomcat was my favorite. I am sure this had to do with my Dad's love of Top Gun, but even without the movie, the plane captured my interest and fascination. The first time I saw an F-14 Tomcat was on the deck of an aircraft carrier turned museum in South Carolina. To my surprise, it was an exact decal replica of a scale model I built earlier that year. However, the real version had less hobby glue on the canopy than mine at home. When I was 14, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I remember feeling scared, nervous, and different. I did not know what this meant for my life or how my life would change, but I knew one thing for sure. I would never be a pilot in the military. Overnight and without warning, my dreams of being a pilot vanished. While this memory is clear and distinct, it was quickly swallowed up by the daily logistics of being diabetic.  Like everyone else, I am constantly dreaming and reinventing myself in large and small ways. Some of my dreams become reality, and some do not. Some dreams evolve and are refined over time, and others spark new or different dreams. I started my career in accounting. While I was in my master of accountancy program at the University of Utah - David Eccles School of Business, I had the dream of starting my public audit career with Deloitte in Seattle, Washington, which audited some of the largest corporations in the world, such as Boeing, Starbucks, Nordstrom, and Microsoft. This is a picture I took while living in Seattle with Mt. Rainier in the background. My two years in Seattle were a catapult for my career today at Baker McKenzie and helped me realize new and old dreams. I am still in love with airplanes and still think the F-14 is very cool, but my dreams of airplanes have evolved from flying them to flying in them, like today when I will fly in a 747 for the first time.  JDRF International #diabetes #bakermckenzie #T1D #dreams #canon #delta
