As I read this op-ed by Aya M. Waller-Bey, MPhil, this sentence jumped out in particular: “Black students are more than their pain, and telling them they are more worthy of opportunity when writing about trauma signals that we believe trauma is the most important part of their identities.” We tell students to read college application essay prompts closely, to understand what the admissions officers are trying to learn. They think about the meaning behind our words too! We should consider what we are signaling, and recognize if we need to change what we say or even rethink our beliefs.
