Biophilic design and Its psychological benefits The built environment shapes how we feel, think, and function. One of the most powerful approaches in modern architecture is biophilic design, which integrates natural elements to strengthen the connection between people and nature. This isn't just about adding plants—it's about designing with intention, using natural materials, optimizing light, and creating visual connections to the outdoors. I’ve seen firsthand how biophilic design elements can improve mental well-being. Natural light, organic textures, and green spaces can lower stress, enhance productivity, and foster a deeper sense of calm. The psychological benefits are profound, and the ripple effect on quality of life is undeniable. In my projects, I aim to incorporate elements that celebrate nature, using sustainable and natural materials that bring the outside in. A space that feels alive, where people can pause and connect with nature, can make all the difference in their daily experience.

This map animation form part of ASPECT Studios’ contribution to ‘Reimagining Birrarung: Design Concepts for 2070’, an exhibition hosted at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne that sees ASPECT Studios join eight leading landscape architecture practices to create a vision of what the future of river might look like.   This video visualises the river’s transformation over the last 10,000 years, from expansive marshlands, lagoons, and waterways to the formation of Port Phillip Bay and Melbourne’s CBD grid. By mapping these changes, we gain insights into the natural and cultural forces that have shaped the landscape, helping us learn from the past to inform a more sustainable and connected future.   Presented by the NGV in association with the Birrarung Council and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Elders, ‘Reimagining Birrarung: Design Concepts for 2070’ is on display until Sunday, 2 February 2025 at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square. In the rush to build, to satisfy need, to procure quickly, to sell, to profit... we are not always blessed with enough time to think and design, and inevitably our built environment suffers. Also, It's easy to get caught-up in the zeitgeist of 'now, new and innovative', but will we be proud of what we have built when we look-back, years from now? Here's a detail of a traditional door casement that we have drawn as part of a large, new neo-classical home in a Georgian-influenced conservation area: The architectural rules are tried and trusted and - if built robustly - in 100 years will without doubt still look beautiful. This is not ground-breaking design, it is comfortable and familiar, but the system of proportion is rigorous. I have never seen the casement Order replicated as a half-pilaster to spring the fan-light from, so I thought I would experiment with it. Would love to see examples of where this has already been done! (I bet it has). The windows are traditional too, with deep, white-painted, render-struck reveals.

Green Roofs: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆... 𝗪𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗚! Every day, we are surrounded by an overwhelming amount of photo-realistic construction #renderings thanks to advanced computing power and AI. Right now, there's a big trend towards #greendesigns, so these images are often filled with lots of plants and #trees. However, when the buildings are actually built, that vibrant #greenery tends to disappear, replaced by materials like steel, #concrete, glass, and occasionally some engineered wood. In recent days I've noticed that some #sellers even prefer to showcase these impressive renderings instead showing the actual property pictures in sales brochures. In approximately 5,000 #research papers discussing #GreenRoofs, a variety of theories regarding their implementation can be found, and the general consensus is well understood. Nevertheless, modern #GreenRooftechnology, which involves the structured creation of nature-inspired soil profiles using high-performance aggregates, has its roots in concepts established in the 1950s. The #HalenEstate in Switzerland, completed in 1960, serves as an exemplary case of modern green roof technology, yet it is often overlooked in discussions surrounding this topic. This estate remains a significant reference point in contemporary housing design, drawing inspiration from the works of Le Corbusier. It continues to be essential knowledge for architecture and landscape architecture students seeking practical insights into innovative design solutions. This site is recognized as a Swiss Heritage Site of national significance and is overseen by the Federal Office of Culture. After more than 60 years, the buildings require some upgrades, and several roofs need #fixing. While it could be possible to complete this work in one or two major renovations, the individual ownerships and the complexities of heritage regulations make it difficult. Nature has been fine tuning these structures for billions of years, so let’s stop building square concrete blocks and start using nature as inspiration. This is a design technique known as biomimicry 🌿 Projects in the video: 1️⃣ Eden Project, UK: The Eden Project designed by Grimshaw Architects, imitates the geometry of soap bubbles to create a lightweight cover for the world’s largest indoor rainforest. 2️⃣ Flax Fibre Pavilion, Germany: This pavilion designed by students from the University of Stuttgart, is made from wound flax fibres, a material that is fully renewable, biodegradable, and regionally available in Central Europe. It takes inspiration from the internal structure of the prickly pear cactus. 3️⃣ Bird’s Nest, Netherlands: The Tij Observatory designed by RAU + RO&AD Architecten, is an incredible wildlife observation hut hidden within a nature reserve. The shape is inspired by a bird’s nest and is made using local timber. 4️⃣ Hive House, India: The Hive designed by OpenIdeas Architects, uses honeycomb as inspiration to create a structure that has high strength, low density, and requires less material for manufacturing.
