🌲 Big ideas thrive when the right people come together. We kicked off day 1 of the International Mass Timber Conference with a tour of two projects that are shaping the future of mass timber in our region. First stop: PDX, where the 9-acre mass timber roof set a new standard by bringing together local foresters, mills, and builders to create something that truly reflects the Pacific Northwest. Attendees didn’t just learn about how it was built—they heard about the importance of investing in regional expertise and creating new opportunities. Next, at Terminal 2, that same spirit is taking shape with the Mass Timber and Housing Innovation Campus, a regional hub for manufacturing and housing construction, research and development, and workforce training where new business ideas are taking root and growing. During this weeks International Mass Timber Conference I had the privilege of touring some incredible, progressive, concept bending Mass Timber projects in the Portland area including a tour of Swinerton’s Timberlab fabrication shop. I am truly in awe of of these stunning projects and the entire engineered wood product process.

It was great to work with Holst, MKA International, Inc. Timberlab and Multnomah County to show of the East County Library project as part of the International Mass Timber Conference Tour!  The tour showcased the mass timber elements of the building focusing on the custom designed wood connections, BIM coordination, preconstruction efforts, temporary protection measures that went into making this project a success.  Special thanks to our own Kevin Kelly LauraBeth Lewis Sean Cowan Ruben Blancas and Monica Emmons for sharing their expertise and insights.

The massive roof redevelopment was unveiled last year with a staggering 9-acre expansion, marking it as the largest project of its kind globally. This unprecedented use of regionally sourced mass timber reflects our region's commitment to local economic development and forest product innovation, incorporating over 3.4 million board feet of local Douglas Fir. Much of the wood was meticulously traced to its origins, including contributions from small family-owned forests and Pacific Northwest tribes. Timberlab was pivotal in sourcing, fabricating, and installing intricate timber components, collaborating closely with local manufacturers like ZIP-O-LAMINATORS LLC and Freres Wood. As part of the 2025 International Mass Timber Conference, attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to tour this state-of-the-art terminal and gain insights into the design and construction processes. We’re excited to share that Tanya Luthi, Director of Engineering at Timberlab, will present at this year’s International Mass Timber Conference as part of the "Mass Timber Advanced Topics: Design, Research, and Serviceability" session. Tanya’s presentation will explore best practices for delegated design in mass timber projects, with a focus on both connection details and full structural systems. She’ll break down strategies to ensure smooth coordination between engineers, fabricators, and installers—highlighting real-world examples of how well-defined design delegation can lead to cost-effective, efficient, and high-performance timber structures. With nearly two decades of structural engineering experience, Tanya is a leading advocate for mass timber construction in North America. At Timberlab, she guides project teams through the technical complexities of mass timber design, ensuring structural feasibility and efficiency from napkin drawings to installation. A major milestone for the Portland International Airport (PDX) TCore Phase 2 project! Last week, the first roof module of Phase 2 was transported across the airfield and carefully moved into its final position over the following nights - a complex operation requiring precision, coordination, and a strong commitment to safety. This work was strategically performed at night to minimize impact on airport operations, thanks to the dedication of the crews who work tirelessly to make it happen. Their expertise and teamwork continue to shape the future of one of the country's top airports. Sharing an exciting milestone as mass timber installation begins at the new School of Art & Design for Portland State University designed by LEVER Architecture. Our first glulam beam was lifted into place this morning... that leaves about 350 more to go! Our partners at Timberlab also installed all 92 columns with impressive speed and precision over just two days. Onward and upward.
