🌿 MOSS: The Tiny Climate Warrior We've Been Ignoring WHAT SCIENCE SHOWS ABOUT THIS HUMBLE PLANT: 🌎 CARBON CAPTURE CHAMPION - Absorbs 4X more CO₂ than trees by volume - Captures pollutants from air and rainwater - Continues photosynthesis when trees are dormant - Creates own ecosystem in urban "dead spaces" 💧 WATER MANAGEMENT GENIUS - Absorbs up to 20X its weight in water - Prevents urban flooding during heavy rains - Slowly releases moisture during dry periods - Naturally filters contaminants from runoff ❄️ URBAN COOLING SYSTEM - Creates natural air conditioning effect - Reduces building surface temperatures by up to 15°F - Thrives on vertical surfaces where trees can't grow - Requires zero irrigation or maintenance 🏙️ CITIES ARE CATCHING ON - Tokyo installing moss walls to combat urban heat - Seattle encouraging moss growth on buildings - European cities creating moss-covered bus stops - Living moss installations purifying indoor air While we spend billions on high-tech carbon capture, this ancient plant has been perfecting the process for 450 million years - for free. Next time you see moss, don't scrub it away. You're looking at one of nature's most efficient climate solutions. #ClimateAction #UrbanGreening #NaturalSolutions

Did you know? Nature-based infrastructure is, on average, 42% less expensive than traditional grey infrastructure—while delivering 36% more value! 🤯 That’s because it reduces costs and adds benefits like: 🌱 Boosted biodiversity 🌿 Cleaner air & water 💚 Improved well-being A life-cycle study of 40 projects (green roofs, wetlands, urban green spaces & more) proves that working with nature is the future of sustainable cities. 🌿 Landscape architects design beyond what is, toward what could be. 🎉 It's World Landscape Architecture Month! This year’s theme — "Landscape Architects Go Beyond Boundaries" — reminds us that landscape architecture is more than design. It’s about regeneration, connection, and imagination. Whether creating parks, memorials, gardens, or public spaces, these projects invite us to reimagine the relationship between people and planet. 🌎 They blur boundaries between urban and wild, history and future, function and beauty — and they show us what’s possible when we design with intention and care. 📍Explore stunning projects that embody this spirit: https://lnkd.in/eRPRzAgW Source: American Society of Landscape Architects #WLAM2025 #LandscapeArchitecture #ThisIsLandscapeArchitecture #SustainableDesign #BiophilicDesign #NatureInDesign #DesignWithPurpose

Nature-Inspired Architecture 🌿🏡 Wouldn’t it be amazing if more buildings were designed like this? 🤩✨ Casa Batlló in Barcelona is a masterpiece of biomimicry and sustainable design! From its flowing facade mimicking ocean waves 🌊 to stained glass windows resembling butterfly wings 🦋, Antoni Gaudí brought nature’s beauty into architecture. But it’s not just about aesthetics—Gaudí designed functional sustainability: 🌬️ A natural ventilation system, like fish gills, circulates fresh air. 💡 A blue-tiled lightwell maximizes daylight, reducing energy use. ♻️ Locally sourced stone, recycled iron & repurposed ceramics minimize waste. Even 100+ years later, restorations honor Gaudí’s eco-conscious methods, ensuring minimal impact. Casa Batlló also uses its platform to illuminate global social causes throughout the year ✊💙. #BiophilicDesign #SustainableArchitecture #EcoDesign #Gaudi #NatureInspired #GreenBuilding #Sustainability #Barcelona #Design Video source: goinggreenmedia

ROEF's green roofs are multifunctional. They not only generate energy, but also provide more nature in the city, and nesting spaces. This increases biodiversity, prevents flooding and counteracts heat stress. The ROEF system addresses multiple pressing challenges by generating renewable energy, increasing insulation, boosting biodiversity, retaining rainwater, counteracting urban heat island effects and adding natural elements to (sub) urban neighborhoods without sacrificing street-level space. All while ensuring the product is affordable and scalable. Water for later In wet periods, these roofs buffer water for later. Smart sensors monitor the condition of the greenery. Double insulated The vegetation protects against the elements and makes these roofs doubly insulating. Solar energy Solar panels generate energy daily. These are neatly concealed among the greenery. Energy neutral Green, but also circular materials make these roofs regenerative within 10 years. Biodiverse Green brings life: these roofs offer plenty of space for a mix of greenery, nesting boxes and insect hotels. Source: @ROEF

Do tiny native plant gardens make a difference? While these tiny gardens may not make a huge difference on their own, there is power in numbers. If a few people did this on each block, even in the densest urban areas, pollinators and other wildlife could be connected to larger areas of nature via these tiny gardens. I encourage you to try this out - even if it’s just a few native plants grown in pots on your balcony or front porch, or a 9 square foot garden in your front yard. We need to put native plants back wherever we can get them! #nativeplants #wildflowers #nativewildflowers #pollinators #garden #nativeplant #plants #gardening #tree #serviceberry #trees #rewilding #rewild #gardens #philadelphia #philly 🎥 Source: andrew_the_arborist

🌊 Water: The Missing Piece in Climate Action 🌊 When we talk about climate action, carbon often takes center stage — but are we overlooking a crucial element? 💡💧 In a new Nature Water paper, renowned landscape architect Kongjian Yu, FASLA, founder of Turenscape, highlights why restoring the natural water cycle is just as vital as reducing carbon emissions. 🌍🌱 Yu, alongside co-authors Erica Gies and Warren W. Wood, argues: “Getting off fossil fuels is undeniably critical. But even if we did that tomorrow, it wouldn’t be enough.” 🛑 Why? Because 75% of Earth’s land has been degraded by agriculture, forestry, grazing, mining, and urbanization — drastically altering the natural water cycle. A healthy water cycle is essential for: 🌧️ Stabilizing global temperatures 🌾 Supporting resilient ecosystems 🌊 Preventing droughts and floods ✨ Projects like Fish Tail Park, Tianjin Qiaoyuan Park, and Sanya Mangrove Park demonstrate how nature-based solutions can restore waterways, revitalize ecosystems, and mitigate climate risks — all while reconnecting people with nature. 🌳💚 🔗 Read the full article on ASLA’s THE DIRT: https://buff.ly/41qgLum 💧 Water is not just part of the solution — it’s central to it. Let’s design with that in mind. 🌎💦 #WaterCycle #ClimateAction #LandscapeArchitecture #NatureBasedSolutions #KongjianYu #Turenscape #ASLA #GreenInfrastructure #SustainableDesign
