“What does it mean to understand your patient’s lived experience?” It’s more than knowing their medical history or writing prescriptions. Truly understanding a patient’s experience begins with a simple, often overlooked question: “How are you doing?” Not just a formality, but a genuine invitation for them to share where they are physically, emotionally, and mentally. Asking this question with intention can uncover the challenges they face outside the clinic—factors like cultural beliefs, financial struggles, or social stresses that directly impact their health. When we take the time to ask and really listen, we’re building trust and empathy that can’t be manufactured. For patients, especially those from marginalized communities, this trust is vital. They need to know that their provider sees them as more than a chart number and that their story matters. It’s not lost on me that if I was digging in dumpsters for food as a child, that reality doesn’t just magically disappear for my patients simply because time passed. This isn’t just about making healthcare more personable; it’s about delivering care that adapts to each unique journey and acknowledges the lasting impact of social, economic, and cultural realities. At The 15 White Coats, we’re working toward a future of medicine that recognizes the whole person. Our mission is to bring empathy, cultural understanding, and authentic connections into healthcare. Join us in creating a system where every patient feels seen and heard by visiting www.15wc.org and making a tax-deductible donation. #HowAreYou #PatientCenteredCare #HealthEquity #The15WhiteCoats #InclusiveHealthcare

Heartwarming innovation for those find hospitals scary ❤️🩹 Who else finds hospitals scary? 🤒🤕 Ella Casano, diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura at age 7, turned her own hospital struggles into a mission to help others. At 13, she invented Medi Teddy, a stuffed toy designed to hide IV and blood bags, offering comfort to children undergoing treatments. What began as a personal project has grown into Medi Teddy Inc., a nonprofit that has distributed thousands of these innovative teddy covers worldwide. During the pandemic, she developed a reusable silicone version to address hospital concerns. Now 18 and heading to Stanford, Casano remains dedicated to easing the fears of young patients through her nonprofit. #Heartwarming #GoodNews #PositiveNews #ChronicIllness #Innovation #MuchMuchSpectrum #ChildrenWithDisabilities #Parenting #Healthcare #Wholesome #RareDisease #SocialGood #ChildDevelopment #HospitalLife

In the health care industry, we understand lead and major donors are motivated differently than the general public, searching for daring, bold causes that stir the imagination and leave a lasting impact. Donors evaluate with their hearts and their heads. On more than one occasion donors have told us, “We’re looking to do more than just support a cause—we want to join a movement!” This puts tremendous pressure on case statements. This document becomes a messaging tetherball between hospital leadership, marketing, physicians, gift officers, board members, communication specialists and even donors. Varying perspectives and personal goals for this document can be overwhelming. Check out the latest perspectives piece from Accordant's Michael Beall to learn how owning your voice and your case statement can help: https://ow.ly/Hz5250UKUTz #healthcare #philanthropy #casestatement #communications

Fascinating and important read about the emergence of participation in arts and culture - both creation and consumption - as medically-approved prescription for anxiety, depression, and pain relief.
We’re honored to be featured in this article by Inside Philanthropy on Social Prescribing in the U.S. 📰 “Social prescribing, particularly as it applies to arts and cultural experiences, is gaining traction in this country, thanks to early adopters rolling out programs statewide (Mass Cultural Council) and regionally (the Virginia-based Benjamin Goldberg Foundation)...The Virginia Beach-based Benjamin Goldberg Foundation (BGF) provides an instructive case study for funders interested in taking a regional approach. Launched in 2018, the foundation, whose namesake was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer, when he was five years old, began by focusing on bringing healing arts to children, caregivers and the community. ‘This mission naturally led to our social prescribing initiative, aimed at improving access to healing arts as a means to address social determinants of health in Hampton Roads [in Southeast Virginia] and beyond,’ said BGF Medical Advisor Dr. Sheetal Ajmani” ✅ Learn more about our work in advancing Arts Prescriptions in Hampton Roads at https://lnkd.in/eXMzr5NG P.S. Wait! What?! 📣 Men's Health Strategy announced by UK Gov Huge congrats to Movember and CEO Michelle Terry 🥳 Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: "We’re seeing mental ill-health on the rise, and the shocking fact that suicide is the biggest killer for men under the age of 50. Preventable killers like heart disease and prostate cancer are being caught far too late. Just as we are determined to end the injustices women face in healthcare, we won’t shy away from the need to focus on men’s health too. This government will publish a men’s health strategy to tackle these problems head-on." We may not have a Minister for Men, Richard Reeves, but I hope you agree this is a good first step - thank you for your game-changing work in this space 🙏🏽 This is fantastic news for the UK and a credit to advocates, charities and thought leaders for getting this on the agenda. ⭐️ If you're running a men's network this is an awesome way to end Movember, so be sure to share the good news internally with colleagues 📣 ⭐️ If you're fundraising for Movember please drop your fundraiser page links in the comments 👇🏽 so we can support you ⭐️ If you don't currently have a men's network, maybe this announcement will inspire you to start one for 2025! #Inclusion #MensHealth #Movember2025 #ERGLeaders #ERGLeaderTraining

“Before we talk about health, we need to talk about life.” Understanding the importance of saying hello and checking in on someone’s overall life quality is paramount in healthcare, especially when working with diverse communities. It’s not just about treating symptoms or diagnosing conditions—it’s about seeing the whole person. This approach respects the rich cultural contexts that shape our patients’ lives. As a Black physician, I’ve seen the difference it makes when we take the time to ask, “How are you doing today?” and genuinely listen to the response. This simple act can build trust, show respect, and open the door to more meaningful and effective healthcare interactions. It’s about acknowledging that health is deeply intertwined with personal experiences, cultural background, and overall life circumstances. When we prioritize understanding the whole person, we create a foundation for better healthcare outcomes. This approach helps us tailor our care to meet the unique needs of each individual, leading to more accurate diagnoses, better adherence to treatment plans, and ultimately, improved health and well-being. Cultural competence isn’t just about knowing the right terms or practices—it’s about genuinely connecting with our patients and recognizing the full spectrum of their lives. By doing so, we not only provide better care but also contribute to the broader goal of health equity. Let’s continue to focus on the whole person, respecting and integrating cultural contexts into every healthcare interaction. Sweatshirts may be purchased to support The 15 White Coats at www.15WC.org and please tell your friends about our nonprofit that is helping in every way to diversify healthcare through scholarships. The best part is that none of us as leaders of this organization get paid, and all of us are minority physicians! #CulturalCompetence #HealthEquity #BlackMenInMedicine #PatientCare #HealthcareOutcomes #WholePersonCare #DiversityInHealthcare #SupportDiversity #15WhiteCoats #Nonprofit #Scholarships

A child’s health shouldn’t depend on their zip code, family income, or access to basic needs. Yet, research shows that 80% of a child’s health is determined by factors outside of medical care. These barriers keep children from achieving optimal health today and lead to lifelong chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and uncontrolled asthma. Together, we can help children live healthier, fuller lives today and into the future. Learn more and join us by making a donation to help remove barriers as part of the Do. More. so all kids thrive campaign. https://lnkd.in/e_J2B2PD
