MAKEathon 2024: Driving Innovation with AI 🤖 On October 26-27, the FHNW School of Business hosted the 4th edition of the MAKEathon, an AI-focused hackathon led by Dr. Emanuele Laurenzi. Over 50 students collaborated with more than 10 AI experts from research and industry to tackle eight real-world challenges presented by various companies. The result? 11 groundbreaking prototypes that showcased the power of hybrid AI (combining data-driven and knowledge-driven methods) in solving diverse business problems. Highlights of the Winning Solutions: 🏆 Team Prosciutti Stagionati (PostFinance’s Challenge): Developed an explainable AI solution using SHAP values, ontologies, and Azure OpenAI to simplify complex model insights for business users. 🏆 Team Turny (Swissport’s Challenge): Built a hybrid-AI system optimizing airport turnaround processes with computer vision and process mapping. 🚀 Team Let’s Fly (SWISS Airlines’ Challenge): Created a multimodal chatbot for drone-based aircraft inspections, combining image segmentation and computer vision. I read an article today about Google DeepMind's robots learning to tie shoes, from Gizmodo.com (Linked in the comments) and while the writer was quick to critique their performance, I think Lucas Ropek missed the bigger picture. Sure, these robots aren't tying shoes perfectly by human standards but what's impressive is that these aren't purpose-built machines for the task. Instead, they're using reinforcement learning and deep learning to teach themselves the skill. The leap forward isn’t in flawless execution; it’s in the robots' ability to learn tasks through software alone.
