I read an article today about Google DeepMind's robots learning to tie shoes, from Gizmodo.com (Linked in the comments) and while the writer was quick to critique their performance, I think Lucas Ropek missed the bigger picture. Sure, these robots aren't tying shoes perfectly by human standards but what's impressive is that these aren't purpose-built machines for the task. Instead, they're using reinforcement learning and deep learning to teach themselves the skill. The leap forward isn’t in flawless execution; it’s in the robots' ability to learn tasks through software alone. This is a landmark achievement for AI and robotics because it shows how adaptable this tech is becoming. And let’s not forget how fast technology moves what seems like "poor" performance today could be groundbreaking efficiency tomorrow. 🚀 Exploring the Power of Imitation Learning in AI🤖 Imitation Learning (IL) is a fascinating machine learning method where an agent learns to perform tasks by mimicking expert behavior. This approach enables agents to acquire complex skills without relying on explicit reward functions, making it highly versatile across various fields. IL typically involves learning from state-action trajectories, where actions are taken based on specific states. One common approach, Behavioral Cloning (BC), treats actions as labels and learns them in a supervised way, while Inverse Reinforcement Learning (IRL) seeks to uncover the reward function that drives expert decisions. A newer method, Inverse Q-Learning, takes it a step further by directly learning Q-functions from expert data. The potential for Humanoid robots at $10k a robot rented out at $100/mth running the best semantic and generative AI models are 36 to 60 months away. This transforms the premises of economy. It seems far fetched and out there until it doesn’t. In the west we are having reflective conversations about this possibility while some countries are forging ahead. The future of work and education is transforming slowly, however this near future reality applies much pressure to that pacing.
