🌍 Today is World Environment Day! 🚨According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world's population and threatening about half of global GDP ($44 trillion). The number and duration of droughts have increased by 29% since 2000: without urgent action, droughts could affect more than three-quarters of the world's population by 2050. 🛰️This is where #spacetech comes to action: Space-based technologies, such as remotely sensed data, have enhanced scientific understanding of water cycles, air quality, forests and other aspects of the natural environment. These surveying and monitoring tools provide valuable information on the state of ecosystems, which offers objective support for positive environmental action, including conservation and sustainable resource management. 💦 With our INNO4CFIs Project, we are leveraging cutting-edge technologies and nature-based solutions to promote sustainable environmental practices, with a focus on carbon farming, reforestation, and agroforestry systems to increase CO2 uptake while nurturing vital environmental benefits like freshwater production, soil restoration and biodiversity enhancement starting with planting 6000 trees in Europe. I was really impressed with the commitment to sustainability that I saw at the Nordic Innovation Summit this week. The State of Washington is very aligned with the Nordic Countries to innovate solutions to our multicrisis. The technologies discussed and the applications that are either in use or in development were very encouraging. One of the most impressive to me was effort by the City of Lund, Sweeden to "internetify" their energy grid - basically using the internet model of nodes and nested networks to update their power grid(s). This will dramatically improve grid efficiency by moving energy where and when it is needed and by capturing what is currently waste heat. https://lnkd.in/d4yszHN2
