We're stoked on seagrass. 🌊 When Will O'Brien and Akhil V. approached us with their vision of gigameadows of seagrass, planted robotically and providing habitat, fisheries, and gigatons of carbon sink, we immediately felt right time x right team x right tech. The ocean hates hardware and tries to destroy everything we put in it. It's a more aggressive environment to operate in than space. But while seagrass punches above its weight for both carbon and biodiversity, it's tough to restore, usually involving divers or waders planting sprigs in shallow water. For this type of problem, robotics is ideal. Imagine a little water WALL-E rowcropping seagrass seeds at the multi-kilometer scale. We can remove the human bottleneck and build the tooling to tackle the most ambitious, country-scale restoration efforts we can envision. It's crazy ambitious and obviously there's more to it than that. But that's what we like at Superorganism: wild ambition. We're excited to back Will, Akhil, Colm, and Jamie alongside Lowercarbon Capital and ReGen Ventures.

It’s been a very good year for Ulysses Ecosystem Engineering Inc. Roaring out of stealth with $1m in revenue, a partnership with the Nature Conservancy and the governments of Florida and Australia, they’re seriously scaling up marine habitat restoration — one bed of carbon-sucking seagrass at a time. A boon to biodiversity, seagrass is home to thousands of species of marine life. It also happens to suck up carbon 35x faster than the rain forests. But climate change has hammered these underwater meadows, and replanting can’t come fast enough. Seeing the opportunity for planetary-scale habitat restoration — and the potential for gigatons of carbon removal — Ulysses got to work. They developed an autonomous underwater robot that can plant seeds faster, cheaper, and more effectively than any other method out there.   Their recent pre-seed raise — which we were stoked to lead — will accelerate their mission. Not to mention their latest effort, the largest seagrass restoration project in human history. 🌊 Kelp Forests: More Productive Than the Amazon Rainforest 😱 It's mind-blowing how our world works in such complex yet pretty straightforward ways. You change one thing in the equation, and everything else changes. I've been swimming and surfing around kelp in the California ocean for years, but when you start understanding what they actually represent, you also start seeing them differently. "California’s incredible kelp forests are a critical ecosystem that is more productive than the Amazon rainforest. A breeding ground for more than 1,000 species, they act as a protective blanket for our iconic beaches and have an immense impact on jobs and revenue for our state." - The Nature Conservancy Warming ocean temperatures and a virus killing sunflower sea stars have led to a massive kelp loss. ➡️ Without sunflower sea stars to eat purple urchins ➡️ these urchins have exploded in number and are ➡️ overeating the kelp. The Nature Conservancy is stepping in with research, restoration, and rewilding. Reducing the urchin population, protecting the remaining kelp, and reintroducing sunflower sea stars to rebalance the ecosystem. While huge amounts of carbon are stored hidden beneath these mangrove forests, some carbon is also stored in every stem, branch, and leaf among mangrove trees. And that's visible from aerial images! We used to estimate above-ground carbon by collecting field data from trees that could cause disturbance for wildlife. Especially, when nesting birds are there. But what if we estimate above-ground carbon by drone imagery? Actually, it is one of the drone's advantages in ecological research! If we can develop efficient methods and overcome challenges drones might help us in mangrove forest conservation! Video captured in the Hara protected area on Qeshm Island.

⛵ The Dutch coast offers much to our country. It serves as a recreational area where people can enjoy the long beaches, host water sports events and where ecology enthusiasts can enjoy the wildlife that lives in the deep blue water. However, what some may not realize is how crowded these waters actually are, with busy shipping routes, fishing activities, offshore wind farms, subsea infrastructure and many other offshore activities taking place. Managing these waters involves finding a delicate balance between space, different activities, and environmental conservation. This requires a lot of logistical planning and medaling between different interests of all the parties involved. Uncrewed vessels (USVs) and autonomous solutions offer an immense value to the blue economy in the Netherlands. We explored the increasing number of use cases for USVs and the value they bring in terms of efficiency, safety, sustainability and for security in various maritime operations. DUS has a vision for the Netherlands to become a key player in #USV technology, while acknowledging the challenges that need to be addressed through collaboration between industry, government, and policymakers.
