Hi, I’m Henk Jekel, a recently graduated MSc Robotics student from TU Delft. During my Mechanical Engineering bachelor, I became fascinated by turning physics into real-world applications. Driven by curiosity about how the world works, especially in this age of automation, it felt like a logical next step to translate my mechanical engineering knowledge into software and dive into AI.   That passion led me to specialize in robotics and has now brought me to an exciting role at Demcon unmanned systems as a 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿. Along the way, I had the chance to:   🥇 Won first prize in the AIRLab robot design competition with our Next-Gen Supermarket Assistant, integrating advanced AI for seamless order fulfillment. ✈️ Intern at KLM, where we built the first adaptive AI IVR for sales training. 🤖 Contribute to the development of the Mirte Master robot at IAMMirte. 🗑️ Worked as an AI Developer at Plaex, where I applied dataset creation and YOLOv4-based transfer learning to boost the accuracy and efficiency of Garby, an automatic waste-sorting robot. 📚 Complete my thesis on teleimpedance with Luka Peternel in telerobotics, graded an 8/10.   After this journey, working at Demcon unmanned systems truly feels like a great reward.   Here, I focus on enhancing the safety and performance of 𝗨𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀 (𝗨𝗦𝗩𝘀). One of my first tasks was to write a COLREG-compliant cost function to allow the vessel to choose a path that complies with maritime traffic rules. It’s great to conduct our USV operations from the comfort of our warm office and work efficiently in the spacious workshop for service and maintenance. Plus, our office sports are also back in full swing!   The final touches to our workspace are still in progress, and we’ll be working hard on them in the coming month. Cutting-edge research drives progress, and governmental grants and subsidies are one of the vital tools in achieving our R&D goals.   These funds support our development of new navigation technologies and USV platform innovations, enabling us to continue offering safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions for maritime operations. This includes offshore energy asset inspections, environmental monitoring, and hydrographic surveying. Additionally, these projects help broaden our network by engaging with other companies in these sometimes-large-scale collaborations.   Demcon unmanned systems has built a notable portfolio over the years and is currently active in multiple multi-year projects. 💧 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 🌍 Water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource, with many European regions facing longer and more severe droughts due to climate change. Beyond availability, the quality of water used for irrigation and aquaculture remains critical. By continuously monitoring water quality, we can optimize irrigation decisions, safeguard the environment, and improve Europe's agri-food resources.   🚤 AGRARSENSE Chips JU Project is an EU-funded project aimed at securing and future-proofing our food supply. The project consists of seven use cases, each with its own goals and specifics. We are thrilled to be working on 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟳, developing advanced 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀.    As part of this effort, Demcon unmanned systems is contributing an autonomous 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹 (𝗨𝗦𝗩) equipped with a 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. This USV integrates sensors from our project partners into its moon pool, enabling 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. We are proud to announce that our newest uncrewed survey vessel (USV), the VO:X Barentsz, is the first uncrewed seagoing vessel to fly the Dutch flag. This significant achievement will drive further development in the field. A vessel is allowed to fly the flag of a country once that country issues a certificate of registry. This connection between the vessel and the flag state forms the basis of the applicable maritime law on board the vessel. This milestone is an significant acknowledgement of unmanned vessels and indicates that the industry, together with the Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat, is developing the required regulations for these vessels. ✅ The VO:X Barentsz is Van Oord’s fifth USV and the first one specialised for operations at sea. This 7-metre vessel is designed for challenging offshore conditions and supports our dredging, offshore wind and maritime infrastructure projects. Unmanned survey vessels enable Van Oord to collect more data for our clients at lower emissions. Additionally, deploying these vessels increases safety by eliminating the need for an onboard operator and surveyor.
