Our 2024 resolutions were simple: 1) protect the West and 2) do everything we can to make you / your communities / wolverines / Coho salmon / cactus / waterways / clean air / wolves etc. proud 🥲 Here's how it went: This year, we worked with 155+ partner groups to tackle urgent environmental issues in the West. Together, thanks to your incredible support, we made a big impact for the lands, waters, wildlife, and communities of the West in the face of a changing climate, including... 🐾 Securing federal Endangered Species Act protections for wolverines! This major victory ensures this animal, which is particularly impacted by climate change due to their reliance on snowpack for denning and hunting, will now have federal protections to aid in their recovery. ⚠️ Ending coal leasing in Montana and Wyoming’s Powder River Basin, the largest coal-producing region in the U.S. This win keeps 48 billion tons of coal in the ground in an area stretching more than 13 million acres !!! 🌵 Protecting nearly 500,000 acres in the Sonoran Desert National Monument from recreational shooting, prioritizing safety and conservation for the monument’s many cultural and natural resources. 🐟 Fueling the removal of Murphy Dam in Oregon’s Rogue River Basin, unlocking 100 miles of upstream habitat for endangered coho salmon. As a nonprofit, public interest law firm, we fight in court to defend wildlife, wild lands, and communities on behalf of our clients and partners – but we can't do it alone. 2025 is going to be a weird time aka...a relentless battle in the face of opposition. By working together through partnerships we can help support our communities. In FY 2023, Reclamation invested $40,000 to help our Tucson partnership acquire 50 new water cisterns. Each cistern can hold 1,500 gallons of rainwater, empowering low-income residents to harvest rainwater for their outdoor landscaping. This initiative aims to boost the planting of native vegetation, cooling down some of Tucson's hottest spots and providing vital habitat for local wildlife. 🦋🌵 Learn more about this exciting program here: https://ow.ly/KQf850Ue3CE

Our Partners, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and The Biggest Little Bee City, are organizing a Saturday Morning Cleanup to support Reno’s pollinator habitats at Valley Wood Park on August 3rd from 8 to 11 am.  Why should we support pollinators? They act as the glue that holds an ecosystem together. Without them, that system would suffer, shrinking the biodiversity around us. They provide pollination services for over 85% of the world’s flowering plants.  Two-thirds of the world’s crop species depend on pollinators, and the United States alone grows over 100 crops that need or benefit from pollinators. Great news that the Coastal Grasslands Reconnected Project is well underway 👏 🌱 🌊 The project will restore 200 hectares of rare coastal habitat along the Durham Heritage coast - which forms part of the 2,700 mile long King Charles III England Coast Path National Trail. It's another inspirational example of #NationalTrails acting as a focal point for projects which deliver for both people and nature. ℹ️ #DidYouKnow that England's Coastal Margin (the strip of access land between the Coast Path and mean low water) covers over 943 square miles? That's larger than the Lake District National Park! 🤯 81% of the Coastal Margin is designated for nature, and nearly 87% of this area has the potential to contribute to the government’s 30by30 target🎯 This means that the King Charles III England Coast Path alongside the Coastal Margin offer a new, once in a generation opportunity to create better nature and access, for people along England's dynamic coastline 👣 🐝 NTUK's Coastal Wildbelt project, funded through the #ProtectedLandscapePartnership, is scoping out how this opportunity can be embraced to drive forward the protection, improvement and enhancement of conditions for people and nature along the coast. Coastal Grasslands Reconnected is just one of the ways in which this opportunity can become a reality 🌟

When seeing litter in the street, it is very easy to say "someone ought to do something about that" or "the township should clean that up." While township public works departments take on many tasks, including street sweeping, they typically do not have the resources that would allow for frequent street sweepings. But, you can be part of the solution to the local litter problem by picking up litter in front of your home and in your neighborhood. It's easy to do and will bring you satisfaction knowing that you are helping your community and the environment. Plus, a litter-free neighborhood boosts the market value of homes and is a source of civic pride. A partnership created between The Nature Conservancy and the State of Mississippi in 2018 established the Phil Bryant Wildlife Management Area. This partnership conserved a rare continuous tract of critically important Mississippi Delta wetland forest. As TNC State Director, Scott Lemmons explains here, this property offers a unique balance of flooded timber and cypress swamps that provide habitat for some of the Mississippi’s largest wintering waterfowl concentrations.

“Back 50 years ago, at this time of the year, every fishing community was the busiest place in the world. You had boats starting up an hour or so before daylight and people going to bed at midnight six days a week. And today, you know you don't see that, except when fish are plentiful.” - Barry Darby, retired sixth generation fisher, Changing Course. Capelin are an important food source for local communities, but they’re also vital food for other fish like Atlantic cod, halibut and salmon. If we want to see rebuilt fisheries in our lifetime, we need to rethink how we manage fish at the bottom of the food chain. If we give capelin the chance, they can rebuild. A new training video produced for NatureScot and Scottish Wildlife Trust featuring wildflower meadow extraordinaire, Lynne Bates! This video shows an innovative method for councils and landowners to establish new meadow sites by using cuttings from existing ones, eliminating the need to purchase seeds and significantly reducing costs. I even used this in my own garden to make a new mini meadow for next year 🌼
