#BREAKING: New Oceana report highlights the hazards of plastic foam and what can be done to curb its impact.

Capelin and northern cod along Canada’s east coast remain depleted—and current fisheries management isn’t addressing the problem. “Capelin hold cultural significance as food for people during the annual capelin roll, draw in humpback whales that support eco-tourism operators, and provide sustenance to the bird colonies that dot the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Capelin is everyone’s fish — and therefore everyone’s responsibility,” Jack Daly, Oceana Canada Marine Scientist. Oceana Canada is calling on Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada to follow science, law, and policy to rebuild these populations and support ocean health, marine life, and coastal communities. A zero-waste legacy for Canada’s FIFA World Cup 2026 host cities starts now! Last week, Oceana Canada and City of Toronto hosted a workshop that brought together stadium and concert venue operators, governments, beverage companies, civil society, and reuse companies to learn about the opportunities to implement reuse and refill systems – replacing single-use throwaway packaging – at World Cup venues. UPDATE: After the commercial Atlantic mackerel fishery was closed in 2022, Fisheries and Oceans Canada extended the moratorium on the fishery in 2024. At this time, they also introduced a personal-use bait fishery, which proved to be a monitoring success even with the immense challenges associated with managing a quota split across five provinces. This year, Oceana Canada recommends a two-year management plan to continue the commercial fishery moratorium while still allowing a 500-tonne total allowable catch (TAC) for the bait fishery to support stock rebuilding of the population and address harvester concerns. Canada generates a shocking 4.6 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. Half of it is made up of single-use items, and less than 9% is recycled. 🤯 The clock is ticking to put an end to single-use waste ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Will we let our stadiums be remembered for mountains of single-use waste or for setting a new zero-waste standard in sports?

Stadiums host thousands of fans for sports games, concerts and more — and with those fans comes a lot of plastic waste. Every event means hundreds of thousands of plastic cups and food packaging sold, the vast majority going directly to landfill. This single-use system is common across Canada and the U.S., but there is a clear solution. Reusable and zero-waste alternatives. Instead of serving trash-bound single-use cups, what if fans got a sturdy cup that was cleaned and re-stocked for the next game?
