Multi-tenant homes (rooming houses) are an important part of Toronto’s rental housing market and provide an affordable housing option for people with low-and-moderate incomes. In 2024, we implemented new rules around these homes to expand affordable housing options and enhance the health and safety of tenants. Landlords and operators of these properties are responsible for ensuring safe and well-maintained multi-tenant houses, this includes creating: 📝A tenant service request plan that responds to all non-urgent service requests within seven days and urgent service requests within 24 hours. ✨ An indoor and outdoor property management plan that addresses how to clean common and dwelling areas and how the exterior property will be maintained. 🐁 A pest management plan that includes an inspection of the property for the presence of pests in common areas at least once every 30 days and hiring an exterminator to conduct all pest extermination activity. 🚮 A waste management plan that includes information on how they will follow the City’s garbage, recycling and organics storage and disposal requirements. The City has a grant program to mitigate the costs for operators, to avoid increases in affordable rents and support the ability to operate multi-tenant houses. “They feed you. They clothe you. You have a bed. You have hot meals. And they'll sit and talk to you and try to work out your problems. I'm so glad I went to that shelter because I really sense an improvement in my quality of life.” Meet Jonathan. When his father passed away, he lost more than a loved one. “I relied on him so much that when he died, I just let everything go. I basically had a nervous breakdown. I didn't know how to deal with it, so I just walked out on life.” Jonathan was unhoused for several years before arriving at the Scott Mission and his journey out of homelessness began. Since leaving the shelter, Jonathan has been stably housed for seven years. He is a regular volunteer at the Fort York Food Bank – an organization that provides hot meals and groceries to low-income individuals and families in downtown Toronto. Everyone deserves shelter. Toronto’s shelters are staffed 24/7, and provide wrap-around supports and services, including meals, laundry, case managers to assist with developing permanent housing plans and more. In 2024, more than 4,300 people experiencing homelessness moved from the shelter system into permanent housing. Learn more about our plan to meet the demand for shelter: toronto.ca/NewShelters

Between 2023 to 2024, working with Youth Climate Action in Toronto at University of Toronto Scarborough, the City engaged over 800 youth between 10 to 25 to gain a better understanding on how to best support youth climate leadership, as part of our #TransformTO Net Zero Strategy. The development, funding and support of climate-centric spaces known as climate hubs was identified as one of the most important tools for youth involvement. Climate hubs could host and facilitate community level organization on justice-centered climate action. The City is exploring ways to provide a physical space for youth to convene and could be paramount for youth climate action. Residential buildings account for 54% of Toronto’s greenhouse gas emissions in the buildings sector. To address this issue, the City is looking to expand programs to help low-rise home or building owners make energy improvements and reduce emissions. The key to reducing emissions in all buildings is through retrofits focused on improving energy performance and transitioning from gas to electric. Energy retrofit measures can seem challenging, so we want to ensure residents have the right tools, programs and support to get started. To take the survey and learn more about current retrofit support programs, visit https://lnkd.in/gpNNA-BD
