Kick-off WP 4 - How to collaborate with your suppliers to co-create circular interventions? 8 October marked the kick-off of Work Package 4 (WP4) of the ESCH-R project at Microlab in #Rotterdam. WP4 - led by ESCH-R project board member and professor Erik van Raaij - focuses on how hospitals can collaborate with their suppliers to co-create circular interventions. In the upcoming four years, the team of WP 4 will identify key purchasing categories with the highest potential impact based on economic and environmental performance metrics. Additionally, viable business models and procurement strategies will be designed and evaluated to incentivize suppliers to develop and deliver circular solutions. The goal is to align suppliers, purchasers, and users around interventions that balance health outcomes, environmental impact, cost, safety, and ease of use. ESCH-R PhD Alice (Yuanyuan) W. presented about the procurement journey at Erasmus MC and the enablers vs. challenges to incorporate sustainability/circularity in this process. The Project Lead Sustainability at UMC Utrecht Cédric Koolschijn, PhD also presented his perspective on the matter at UMCU. During the WP4 kick-off, participants also engaged in Socratic listening, a key element of the Socratic dialogue approach. This method emphasizes deep, reflective listening and questioning, encouraging critical thinking and understanding. It is an effective way to foster open communication and collaboration. That’s what we want in the upcoming years!! Thanks to Humberto Schwab, the developer of ‘Socratic Design – How we design our existence ourselves and his colleague Miguel Harbers Socratic Design Academy Thanks also to our guests and other WP4-members: Duygu Keskin (ESCH-R WP4), Vikrant Sihag (ESCH-R WP4), Maike Tietschert (ESCH-R WP4), Myriam Erckens-Cloodt (ESCH-R WP4) , Maaike van Zuilen (communication manager ESCH-R), Jilske Huijben (ESCH-R program manager), Estelle Fraysse (Medtronic), Sammar Noor (DORC Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center (International), Maarten Timmerman (Erasmus MC), Priscilla Lips (Wittenburg Group), Estelle Fraysse (Medtronic), Laura Koot (Medtronic), Onno Roovers (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam), Maaike Van 't Zand (Philips), Hans Leijen (Philips), Stephanie Resnick (Philips), Bas van Tiggelen (Erasmus MC), Melissa Kars (PreZero Nederland), Cédric Koolschijn, PhD (UMC Utrecht), Arthur Haag (PreZero), Marlijn Caspers (Nevi) #sustainablehospitals #ESCHR #circularhospital #sustainability #livinglabs #research #greenhealthcare Nicole Hunfeld Jan Carel Diehl Redmer van Leeuwen Albert Wagelmans Florijn Dekkers Erasmus MC TU Delft UMC Utrecht Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam

Creating an Innovation Ecosystem: Lessons from Haier This past year, my IMD colleague Bill Fischer and I did a major project for Haier on creating a culture of innovation. Based in Qingdao, China, Haier has attained a global reputation for innovation for their work in the appliance industry. Our research focused on their extensive network of 4000 Micro-Enterprises (MEs) that help them create innovative ecosystems, where independent MEs draw on resources both inside and outside of Haier to create a stream of innovative products for new and existing markets. What elements of ME culture are most important to successful innovation? We studied a set of successful Haier MEs, through intensive interviews and a broad scale survey. This TRANSFORM article summarizes what we learned from our work with Haier. **Greener, Smarter Innovations from Chinese Brands Shine at Europe’s Latest Expo** The latest European technology exhibition showcased some of the most groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence, sustainability, and premium quality from Chinese brands. Outside the exhibition halls, a series of enormous banners highlighted the innovative efforts of these companies, drawing significant attention from attendees and media alike. Chinese brands are rapidly becoming synonymous with smart, eco-friendly, and high-quality products. At the event, product demonstrations shared a common theme of harnessing artificial intelligence to create more efficient and sustainable solutions in various industries. Whether it’s AI-driven manufacturing processes that reduce waste or intelligent consumer electronics that adapt to user patterns to save energy, the commitment to a greener planet was evident. One standout was a home appliance brand that introduced AI-enhanced washing machines capable of determining optimal wash settings based on the type and amount of laundry, significantly reducing water and energy consumption. Another company exhibited a revolutionary electric vehicle with an AI navigation system that optimises route planning for energy efficiency. The emphasis on sustainability extended to packaging and materials as well. Several brands highlighted their use of recycled materials and biodegradable packaging, aligning their product development with global environmental goals. In addition to sustainability, premium quality was a focal point. Many attendees noted the superior build quality and attention to detail in the showcased products, successfully challenging the dated perception that Chinese brands are primarily cost-driven rather than quality-focused. Overall, the innovation on display demonstrated that Chinese brands are not just keeping up with global trends but are often at the forefront of technological and ecological advancements. As these companies continue to invest in greener technologies and smarter solutions, they are likely to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable living. As we continue to witness these exciting developments, it's worth pondering: How do you see AI and sustainability transforming your industry in the next five years? #Innovation
