A long white cane user since age six, he attended the Oregon State School for the Blind, and attribute the blindness skills and strong sense of internal agency gained there for much of his success in life. He entered the nonprofit sector through fundraising. His first nonprofit job was as a development officer for the Seattle Public Library Foundation, raising money for the statewide Talking Book and Braille (NLS) Library. During that time, he earned a Master’s degree in Not-For-Profit Leadership from Seattle University, and earned the Certified Fundraising Executive credential from the Association of Fundraising professionals. He was originally hired by the Seattle Lighthouse to stand up a comprehensive fundraising program and a supporting Foundation and fundraising board. Moving into the CEO roles at the Lighthouse and AFB, he continuously developed his network of relationships with others interested in the inclusion of people with disabilities. He currently has 4900 friends on Facebook, and 29,000 connections on LinkedIn. Legacy is not what we leave behind, but what we give away while we're still alive. The greatest legacy we can leave is the positive impact we have on others. The love we share, the memories we create, and the lives we touch. As I watched this video of seniors laughing and playing together, I was struck by the beauty of life's journey. These individuals, in their golden years, are still living, still loving, and still leaving a mark on the world. But it also made me realize that we're all heading in the same direction. We're all getting older, and our time on this earth is limited. What will we leave behind? What impact will we make? Something to think about: 1. Life is precious: Let's make the most of every moment. 2. Age is just a number: Life is a journey, not a destination. 3. Joy is contagious: Spread love & laughter wherever you go. 4. Community is key: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. 5. Legacy is not just about what we achieve, but how we make others feel. Let's prioritize love, kindness, and compassion. Although our umbrella, Oyanova Enterprises, has actively been four years in the making, Oyanova Healing has been a lot less directly in the making since 2015. It was then that I began my therapist training at The Kedzie Center where I learned the true power of community and mobilization. The seed had been planted. Learning about the importance of partnership and the different ways mental health services can be funded set my brain in motion. Together, with my wife, Dr. Jessica Esquivel, we began to dream up how we could make things better in our corner of the universe. Fast forward to 2020 when all of us were reevaluating our work places and work in general… Everything came to a head for my wife and I. We, like many others, realized just how burned out we were. The Covid-19 Pandemic coupled with the civil unrest had both of us struggling in our workplaces. It was during this time that we gave ourselves permission to seriously and intentionally dream up a better world. What if we prioritized our mental well being over capitalism and productivity rooted in colonization? And instead we focused on self and communal sustainability. What if we insisted on radical hope and joy despite all else? What if we could create an ecosystem of dignified care, healing and education that would allow Black and Brown communities to truly thrive? How could we continue to build on each other's strengths to grow our communal health and wealth? What if we focus our efforts on uplifting those that are intentionally marginalized in our spaces and build just and equitable ecosystems for us to thrive?
