As a nurse whose passion is to care for patients this breaks my heart. However I’m glad they’ve taking the time to ask us about patients safety. We have been saying it for years, the level of safety is dangerous and alarming. As the nurse you are stretched, stressed, unsupported, not respected, under staffed and underpaid. Hence nurses (newly qualified and senior nurses) are leaving the profession to do other jobs. Something has to change. To change this awful situation we need to formally own it is happening, I hope this report focuses attention on the normalisation of dangerous unsafe working conditions.

"Corridor Care: A Reflection on the Royal College Of Nursing (RCN) Report" The recent RCN report highlighting the rise of corridor care is deeply concerning. Patients being treated in corridors is not just a breach of dignity but a symptom of a healthcare system under immense strain. This is a moment to pause and reflect: How does this impact patient safety and dignity? Treating patients in non-clinical spaces can compromise infection control, privacy, and access to timely care. What does this mean for staff well-being? Nurses and healthcare professionals are already overstretched, and working in these conditions adds to the emotional and physical toll. How can we address the systemic issues? Corridor care is a symptom of deeper problems—workforce shortages, lack of resources, and inadequate infrastructure. We need to ask ourselves: What immediate steps can we take to prevent this from becoming normalised? How can we amplify the voices of those directly affected—patients and staff? What role does innovation, policy reform, and investment play in creating sustainable solutions? As healthcare professionals, we must continue advocating for systemic changes that uphold the dignity of our patients and the well-being of our workforce. This situation is not acceptable, and it’s a reminder of the urgent need for action. Let’s keep this conversation going—what are your thoughts? How can we work together to tackle this issue?

A full and radical review is needed of how our hospitals are used and abused and the infrastructure that supports the current situation. A better public understanding around access and more clarity on service usability are needed. Triage methods should be reviewed to safeguard departments from inappropriate access thus responding to genuine need and protecting hospitals from having to mop up those patients who cannot access the right services or those who use A&E as a revolving door.

Every patient deserves safe, dignified care in appropriate spaces, and healthcare professionals deserve the resources and support to deliver it. Having personally nursed patients in corridors since 2013, corridor nursing isn't a new problem, but we should never consider it the norm. Can patients truly feel safe in a corridor? Can nurses ever feel like they have cared for their patient with dignity in a corridor? Probably not. There are a lot of questions with corridor nursing and boarding, but perhaps what we should be doing is finding sustainable solutions instead. Not the 'let's do this initiative for a week now', or the 'sticky plaster quick fix that doesn't fix anything', but making real tangible change. Ideas for change come from you. The person reading this. The patient. The relative. The health professional. The cleaner. Anyone who comes into contact with our services. You are the voice.
