Our mission at Neighborhood Pets is to #TakeCareOfEachOther. The new PALS program, in partnership with Benjamin Rose, is just one example of how we are working with human services organizations to expand the care we offer to Clevelanders in need. Check out Frank Lewis’s story in Signal Cleveland that dives into the PALS program and other program partnerships we’re making to help people and their pets get the care they need.

"It takes a village to raise a kid!" We have a wealth of knowledge and collective wisdom available from family, friends, and the community when it comes to raising children. Whether it’s dealing with teething, fevers, or runny noses, we can always lean on someone for advice. But what about our pets? 47% of the pet parents are first-timers, and unfortunately, there’s a lack of reliable resources to turn to. This gap can lead to inadequate care, untreated health issues escalating into emergencies, and even pet abandonment. Take my co-founder Supriya, for example. As a dedicated dog mom for a decade, she’s invested years in understanding pet behavior. But, unlike her, many pet parents lack knowledge about preventive care, behavioral signs, and their pets' general health. And who bears the brunt? The pets! This HAS to change. There’s not only an urgent need for reliable sources of information, but pet parents also need actionable insights to take better care of their pets. We are doing our small part in changing this at Hoomanely Inc. Watch this space—big news coming! Pet parents are all heart! According to Best Friends Animal Society, 9 out of 10 pet parents consider pets a family member. And it’s no different when they’ve welcomed a rescue pet into their pack, whether permanently or as fosters. Research by Forbes shows that some of the top ways pet parents show their love toward their fur babies include: Taking family photos with their pet (58.7%), Including their pet in a holiday card (36.2%), Regularly preparing homemade food or treats (45%), Ordering their pet a special treat at a restaurant (43.2%), Taking their dog to dog-friendly activities (43.2%), Buying their pet a holiday gift (67.2%). If this sounds like you, you are a special breed, and our kind of pet parent! 🐾🎉 To celebrate National Pet Parents Day on April 28 — and help more pets find and stay in their forever homes — Pet Prana® is partnering with select pet rescue organizations to champion foster and adoption, and empower pet parents with free dog training resources. As we wrap up National Pet Adoption Week, it's important to recognize a lesser-known reason behind overcrowded shelters: many elderly and disabled pet owners are forced to surrender beloved pets—not because they want to, but because they lack the right tools to safely care for them at home. When tasks like cleaning a litter box become too challenging, heartbreaking decisions often follow. Last year, around 25% of shelter intakes were due to owner surrenders driven by challenges like financial hardship and mobility issues. Enter LoftyLoo—the first-ever Accessible, Elevated Litter Box, designed to empower elderly and mobility-challenged cat owners. By addressing this crucial gap in pet care, LoftyLoo directly reduces the strain on overcrowded shelters. The more you know. I didn’t fully understand the gap in pet care until I witnessed it firsthand. A neighbor faced an impossible choice: surrender his cherished cat or somehow find a way to care for him with the right support. Watching him struggle made me sick to my stomach; he adored his furbaby, but with age and illness, bending over to clean a litter box on the floor was no longer an option. That’s how LoftyLoo™ was born. Did you know overcrowded shelters are often filled with pets surrendered by elderly and disabled owners—not by choice, but because they lack accessible tools for safe pet care? Last year, about 25% of shelter intakes were due to owner surrenders for reasons like mobility issues and financial hardship. These are heartbreaking statistics we hope to change. #PetCareSolutions #AnimalShelterSupport #AgingWithPets #InnovativePetProducts #SeniorPetCare #PetParentCommunity #PetWellness #ShelterOvercrowding #InclusivePetCare #LoftyLoo

"No pets without permission?" Clearly someone hasn’t lived in a community setting before! Most retirement villages are actually pet-friendly—83% according to PwC. The key is balancing the needs of residents and ensuring pets fit the community. It's important to assess if the pet is suitable and if the owner can provide proper care. A proactive approach to pet policies is essential, keeping conversations transparent and policies flexible. Need help refining your village’s pet policy? Our Pet Policy is one of the most downloaded documents. Contact us at dcmi@thedcmgroup.com.au for more information. free post adoption support services??!! whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhat?! "Does Petszel check in on how the adopted pets are adjusting to their new home? Post-adoption, Petszel sends surveys on behalf of the shelter to the new pet parents to understand how the transition to the new home is going. Surveys are sent to the pet parents on days 1, 7, 30, 60, and 90, where they can share what is working well, what challenges they have, and if they have scheduled this first vet visit. Currently, if any pet owner says they want shelter follow-up or have specific challenges, you will receive an email with the survey sent to your shelter account so your team can reach out to that adopter. Cats: Destructive scratching, Urinating and/or defecating outside the litter box, Aggression towards animals, or Aggression towards people Dogs: Food/resource guarding, Destructive chewing/scratching, Urinating and/or defecating in the house, Aggression towards animals, Aggression towards people"

The Boston Globe reports on how pet and veternary costs can compound on housing prices to cause housing instability. Here's what you should know: - The housing crisis in Massachusetts is forcing many residents to make difficult decisions, such as having to choose between their pets and housing due to restrictions in rental agreements. This is compounded by the rising cost of living and limited pet-friendly housing options. - In Boston, one of the least pet-friendly cities in the U.S., residents face high veterinary costs and a lack of affordable pet care, leading to a significant number of pets being surrendered due to financial or housing-related issues. - The Animal Rescue League of Boston offers vital support, such as temporary housing for pets, to help keep families together during housing crises. However, more community involvement and legislative action are needed to address the intersection of housing instability and pet care. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eVYNRKkQ

"Adoptions have slowed. The good news is that intakes are actually lower than last year and materially lower than 2019. And when you think of intakes, you don't just think of relinquishments. In fact, relinquishments is not the biggest driver of intakes, lost pets are. Almost 50% of all incoming pets into shelters, and we have data from thousands of shelters through Petco Love, almost 50% of intakes are actually lost pets. So, it's critically important for pet parents to make sure they take the appropriate controls, whether that be chips or other means to track their pets so that we can slow down the intakes into shelters. Adoptions have slowed a bit. Those are down from last year as are intakes." - Mr. Brian LaRose, CFO of Petco Health & Wellness Company, Q2 2024 Earnings Call, September 10, 2024
