Mars is dedicated to making the world a better place for pets and is committed to ending pet homelessness around the world.  For the last 16 years, we’ve held an annual global ‘Pet Adoption Weekend’ to support animal shelters and raise awareness for pet adoption. Excitingly, this is the first year that campaign is going global! The theme of this year’s Global Adoption Weekend (12th - 13th October) is ‘comPETibility’, shining a light on how important it is to match pet parents and rescue animals based on shared lifestyle interests and behaviours that will set them up for a lifelong connection. In the UK, we’re working with the fabulous Fred Siriex and our friends at Battersea to ‘match make’ adopters to their perfect match.  You wouldn’t pick a life partner based solely on looks alone, so why would you do the same for your pet? Our Global Pet Parent Study has uncovered a heartbreaking reality. From a study of 20,000 pet parents only 11% of dog owners and 17% of cat owners globally adopt from shelters. When tasks like cleaning a litter box become too challenging, heartbreaking decisions often follow. Last year, around 25% of shelter intakes were due to owner surrenders driven by challenges like financial hardship and mobility issues. Data suggests that on average about 10-15% of the puppies adopted during the holiday season are returned to shelters within a matter of weeks. And that data only reflects what shelters can track and doesn't include the pets rehomed elsewhere. Did you know the dog adoption rule of 3/3/3? This is especially true with shelter pets! First 3 Days: This is the initial decompression period. Your new pet might feel overwhelmed and may exhibit signs of stress, such as hiding, pacing, or having accidents. It's important to give them space and limit interactions to help them settle in. First 3 Weeks: During this time, your pet starts to feel more comfortable and begins to understand both your and their new routine. This is also the period where behavioral issues may start to appear, and basic training can begin. First 3 Months: Your pet may start to show their true personality, have established human-pet bonds with the family, and truly become comfortable, confident, and secure in their new environment. Adding a new furry family member can be both challenging and rewarding at the same time. Please remember, this experience can be as stressful for them as it is for you!
