The One Health approach recognizes the interconnection between humans, animals, plants, and the environment shared by all, and promotes interdisciplinarity within the joint actions. The goal is to protect the whole system and maintain the global health. It is a complex and not always clear venture, due to the interconnection in the different systems, the ever-growing population, the different human crises happening in the world, and the lack of political will. However, #OneHealth was designed to help implement policies that facilitate conversations between multiple sectors to achieve better policy outcomes, including public and private organizations, research and political organisms, and regulatory agencies. In this line, ProtoQSAR and MolDrug AI Systems are working on identifying new sustainable candidates for antimicrobial solutions to be used such as biocidal paints, new disinfectants or conservants in foods as it is being done in #Paint4IRAS, #BioCODES, funded by IVACE+i Innovación Cadena de Valor program, and #COMPU-FOOD projects, respectively. Moreover, to guarantee ecological and human safety #(eco)toxicological predictions are consistently performed. At ProtoQSAR and MolDrug we believe in the urgency of application of the One Health approach not only for identifying new antimicrobials but also to reinforce the surveillance and readiness protocols in case of a new health crisis caused by climate change, wars, or environmental negligence.

We all know that #PFAS is bad for the environment and for human health. The same can be said about #microplastics... A new study has shown that when organisms are exposed to both at the same time, there is a synergistic effect which amplifies the toxicity of both substances. We will continue to work to #BanPFAS and #BeatPlasticPollution https://lnkd.in/eUVXjdVA

🌱 Alternative Proteins for a Sustainable Future 🌍 Last week, I had the honor of participating in the International Conference on Alternative Proteins for Food and Feed, organized by the prestigious German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung). This event brought together innovation, science, and sustainability to explore the future of food and feed. I had the opportunity to present a poster on Foodborne pathogens in Plant-Based alternative foods, sharing the results of my research and engaging with experts, academics, and professionals from around the world. 💡 It was inspiring to witness the passion and dedication driving the development of alternative proteins—an essential field to tackle global challenges such as food security, climate change, and the growing demand for sustainable resources. Thank you to the BfR and all the organizers for creating such a stimulating and collaborative platform. I’ve returned with new ideas, potential collaborations, and renewed motivation to contribute to innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. #AlternativeProteins #Sustainability #Innovation #FoodTech #Research

Sirish Subash, a 14-year-old ninth grader from Georgia, has achieved a historic win at the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge with his innovative device, “Pestiscand.” This AI-driven, portable tool is designed to detect pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables, giving consumers a practical way to safeguard their health. Pestiscand functions by using spectrophotometry to assess light reflections on produce. The data is then processed by a machine learning model to accurately identify harmful pesticide residues that could pose health risks. Sirish’s invention addresses a significant issue: the potential health impact of pesticide exposure in our diets. Awarded $25,000 for his breakthrough, Sirish’s ambition goes beyond awards and monetary gains. His mission is to help consumers make safer choices, reduce pesticide-related health risks, and promote healthier food practices for families globally. With this invention, Sirish is not only advancing food safety but also showing the incredible potential young innovators hold to make a positive impact. #YoungInnovator #3MYoungScientist #PesticideDetection #FoodSafety #HealthInnovation #AIinHealth #Spectrophotometry #Pestiscand #FutureOfFood #YouthInScience

The science is clear—our climate is changing, and the change is caused by human activity. We can still make a difference. But we must act together. When the world takes coordinated action, we know profound and lasting impacts can follow. One of the action is to use recycable /biodegradable plastic. This is a big commitment.

🌍 Last week, FAIRR participated in the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress which brought together global stakeholders to discuss strategies and innovations around #AntimicrobialResistance. 💊 During a fireside chat, Emma Berntman, PhD, FAIRR’s Senior Engagement Specialist, and Maria Larsson Ortino, Senior Global ESG Manager at Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM), explored the role investors can play in mitigating the development of #AMR. ✍️ They discussed the value of instigating stewardship dialogues with companies and policymakers, spotlighting concrete examples such as the latest investor statement convened by the Investor Action on Antimicrobial Resistance (IAAMR) initiative and the investor guide on AMR co-authored by FAIRR and MSCI Sustainability Institute. More broadly, participants of the Congress reaffirmed the need for increased funding of new antimicrobials and highlighted the opportunities #ArtificialIntelligence can provide, as well as the continued need for cross-disciplinary collaboration. While it was encouraging to see more discussions on the environmental aspect of antimicrobial contamination of #wastewater than in previous years, agricultural use of antibiotics was not covered as extensively - despite nearly 75% of global antibiotic use occuring in animal agriculture.
