𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟬𝟲   𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙈𝙍 𝘓𝘦𝘵'𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘔𝘙 s𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥: The environment plays a 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 in the spread of antimicrobial resistance. When antibiotics are used in healthcare and agriculture, they can enter the environment through various pathways, including wastewater from hospitals, runoff from farms, and improper disposal of pharmaceuticals. This leads to the contamination of soil, water, and air, which can harbor resistant microbes and antimicrobial residues. In aquatic environments, for example, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿. This means that 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. Wildlife, too, can become carriers of resistant microorganisms, spreading them across ecosystems and even back to humans. Moreover, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, especially in countries with weak environmental regulations, often discharge antibiotics into nearby water bodies, causing more problems. 𝘈𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 microorganisms 𝘴𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘰𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦. Tackling AMR requires 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲 in medicine and agriculture but 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 to minimize the release of antimicrobials and resistant microorganisms into the environment. 🌱 Exciting news from Evolve Genomix! They have been awarded $270,128 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the National Science Foundation's Small Business Innovation Research Program Phase I. This funding will support the development of a low-cost, field-use DNA-based rapid diagnostic device for plant diseases. This innovative project aims to help farmers take early action against destructive plant diseases, reducing reliance on harmful pesticides and improving crop yields. #SBIR #STTR #Innovation #Agriculture 🔬 The project will focus on creating a user-friendly, affordable testing device that allows farmers to quickly identify plant diseases right in their fields. This early detection will enable more sustainable farming methods, enhance food security, and maintain U.S. competitiveness in the global food trade. From IPPE in Atlanta, Hamlet Protein CEO Erik Visser talks with us about key market drivers and developments for 2024. Among the things we touch are how 1) animal protein production, and with it the production of animal feed, will keep growing in 2024 but at a slower pace, 2) South American and Asian markets are better positioned for growth than mature markets in Europe and North America, 3) animal diseases and geo-political matters can potentially strongly impact the industry, and 4) ESG regulation will play a more prominent role in business decisions. Feeding a growing world population in an efficient and sustainable manner will be the main focus for all market segments, according to Visser.

[Pesticides] 🎉👏Congratulations to Joséphine Gatin who brilliantly defended her Kungliga Tekniska högskolan (KTH) master thesis🎓yesterday on the topic : "Ecotoxicity Life Cycle Impact Assessement of agricultural productions in France" .  🌿 | 🌽🍅🚜 Joséphine developed a model to generate yearly inventories of substances application per type of crop/ production , based on National public data 📊.  This model is plugged to substances' (eco)toxicity models to assess the magnitude of pollution from pesticides depending on substances' toxicity. Joséphine chose to apply the UN consensus-based #USEtox model, but other models are possible such as qualitative danger assessment developed by NGOs.  🙏 We thank all the sparring partners who have helped us frame the project and we hope it will be useful to measure and challenge toxicity assessment (e.g. #environmentallabeling, #ecolabeling, #biodiversity foot-printing) and to improve #pesticide practices.    We are currently working on a public report describing the methodology. We will welcome constructive comments to improve computations and address current limitations. How to detect more antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria in our waterways By 2050, AMR could cause 10 million deaths annually, according to the UN Environment Programme. But, as Dr Zina Alfahl BPharm, AFHEA, PgCert, PhD writes in The Conversation U.S. it is not just a human health issue. It also contributes to a decline in water quality and is exacerbated by water pollution, particularly from sources such as sewage and agricultural runoff. So, it’s a significant environmental concern with far-reaching implications. In her article Dr Alfahl has called on Governments around the world to prioritise investments in technologies that are not only scientifically robust but also economically viable, particularly for low- and middle-income countries. The One Health approach recognizes the interconnection between humans, animals, plants, and the environment shared by all, and promotes interdisciplinarity within the joint actions. The goal is to protect the whole system and maintain the global health. It is a complex and not always clear venture, due to the interconnection in the different systems, the ever-growing population, the different human crises happening in the world, and the lack of political will. However, #OneHealth was designed to help implement policies that facilitate conversations between multiple sectors to achieve better policy outcomes, including public and private organizations, research and political organisms, and regulatory agencies. In this line, ProtoQSAR and MolDrug AI Systems are working on identifying new sustainable candidates for antimicrobial solutions to be used such as biocidal paints, new disinfectants or conservants in foods as it is being done in #Paint4IRAS, #BioCODES, funded by IVACE+i Innovación Cadena de Valor program, and #COMPU-FOOD projects, respectively. Moreover, to guarantee ecological and human safety #(eco)toxicological predictions are consistently performed. At ProtoQSAR and MolDrug we believe in the urgency of application of the One Health approach not only for identifying new antimicrobials but also to reinforce the surveillance and readiness protocols in case of a new health crisis caused by climate change, wars, or environmental negligence.
