Battery and hydrogen fuel cell specialist Corvus Energy has been awarded DNV Type Approval for its Pelican Fuel Cell System, which will see vehicle manufacturer Toyota’s fuel cell technology used to enhance the provision of battery electric vessels for the marine market. The automotive industry is making rapid advances with development of electric vehicles and the potential environmental and efficiency wins has naturally not gone unnoticed in the world of shipping. Battery-electric technology in the form of all-electric and hybrid is now a regular feature with new ships of all sizes, so a sharing of automotive industry knowledge with the marine sector can be seen as a natural development. The Corvus Pelican Fuel Cell System was developed through the three-year H2NOR project and claims to be the first fuel cell system designed to be inherently gas-safe, ‘making it the safest fuel cell system in the market’, according to Corvus. Positive progress is reported with the first installation ready for the fishing and training vessel Skulebas, owned by Vestland County and operated by Måløy Upper Secondary School in Norway. The 35m long vessel already has a 1MWh battery system and by adding the Pelican Fuel Cell System and hydrogen storage, Skulebas will be able to operate for four days with zero emissions, says Corvus. Just returned from the ''Wind Propulsion 2024'' Event by RINA in association with The International Windship Association (IWSA) at IMO. Sponsored by bound4blue and VAISALA: A really insightful event! As Secretary General, Gavin Allwright reminded us: shipping is the the only truly global industry with a net zero target. The attendees must represent the largest and most focussed collection of people discussing how to achieve that by utilising the wind as a primary means of getting there. The stand outs for me were: 1) An immense collection of rapidly maturing knowledge and enthusiasm around how to design, model and optimise these systems 2) Some real operational experience now exists which underlines great promise 3) Excitement that we will see an acceleration of deployments and ever better results 4) A vision for what more needs to be done must include: helping people choose options, objectively measuring performance (as best we can), and making sure we keep finding ways to ensure operation continues to be as safe as we can make it.

The cruise industry is accelerating their push to get to net-zero. And Royal Caribbean Group is leading the way by opting Wartsila's 46TS-DF series for their flagship, Utopia of the Seas. "Utopia of the Seas is the first vessel to deploy the new Wärtsilä 46TS-DF engine. Six engines are deployed with a power of 96,000 kW. Three azipods of 20 MW each are fitted, and selective catalytic reduction is used for NOx removal. Wärtsilä says “close collaboration between Royal Caribbean Group, Wärtsilä and French yard Chantier de l’Atlantique was key to the successful development and introduction of the first Wärtsilä 46TS-DF engine”." It will be interesting to see how the setup can allow the vessel to transition to HVO as well as Bio and e-methane in the long term. It will also be interesting to see how the rival engine from MAN, the 49/60DF will fare in terms of orders. What are your thoughts on this development? Hybrid propulsion tugboats are revolutionizing the maritime industry by integrating alternative fuels and advanced propulsion technologies, reducing emissions and improving efficiency. The International Maritime Organization aims to halve GHG emissions from international shipping by 2050, with the ultimate goal of zero emissions by the end of the century. Hybrid tugboats, such as Foss Maritime's Carolyn Dorothy and Seabulk’s Spartan and Titan, have showcased significant environmental benefits. Svitzer is designing the world’s first methanol hybrid fuel cell tug, expected to operate in 2025, and contribute to reducing shipping emissions in the port of Gothenburg. While there are challenges, the benefits of hybrid tugboats are driving global interest, with ongoing research and development to maximize their potential. 👀 Read more about this research in detail here: https://lnkd.in/gqK4aXJ9 #oceanlogisticslimited #maritimeindustry #tugboat #hybridtechnology
