Last week Community Works Works held our Winter Food Network Meeting (with reps from foodbanks across Adur/Worthing). This session was hosted by at one of our member’s premises. The Gateway Hub in Fishersgate Southwick 🥰 Another eventful in-person networking opportunity for members to come together to share experiences and discuss the pressing challenges and indeed opportunities foodbanks are coming across in an environment where cost of living is rising. How do we balance stringent food standards with the urgent need to reduce food waste and support foodbanks meeting rising demand. And how can we empower Foodbanks by creating clearer guidelines for the donation of surplus food and improving logistics to bridge the gap between surplus and scarcity. We had the opportunity to tour their incredible facility including their cafe area. food pantry and storage and their shop ❤️. Of course, it won’t be a food network meeting without food and Jill and team at Gateway Hub delivered exceptionally with a festive spread of yummy nibbles.🥘🍛🥗🍝🧇 A huge thank you to all attending members for their insights and commitment to creating a sustainable food system. Let’s keep the momentum going! 💡 Looking forward to working with these incredible movers and shakers working to support vulnerable families and individuals across the area next year and if you have ideas or initiatives addressing food waste or food insecurity, we would love to connect and learn from you. Buying and eating local food is better for your health and for the health of our community, but it’s not always as easy as a quick run to your nearest grocery store. Right now it’s easier than ever, as Western New York is at the height of our harvest season. Farmer’s markets abound with local food options, and it’s a great way to meet the farmers and producers and ask them how you can shop locally in the off-season. Eat Local WNY offers a number of resources on their website to help you track down local food. It also offers a local food pledge, created to help encourage WNYers to increase their consumption of local food by just 10% this year. To learn more about local food availability, access and benefits, to hear more stories from the local food community, or to take the Eat Local WNY Food Pledge, visit eatlocalwny.org.

🍏Is it possible to reimagine the food system into one that looks and sounds abundant vs scarce? 🥦Can a nonprofit partner with a for-profit business and do even more good? 🫑Can food scarcity be solved by simply having better logistics and nimble business models? 🥬Do we actually have twice the amount of food needed to feed everyone experiencing food insecurity in our state? The answers to all of these questions are YES. https://lnkd.in/g-mrwt6H

Farm-to-food-assistance equals an investment in local farming as much as food security.
Farm-to-food-assistance programs are thriving, signaling a new way for communities to fight hunger. The Food Dignity Movement and Eloise's Cooking Pot Food Bank (part of Making A Difference Foundation (THEMADF SEATTLE)) are among the organizations finding creative ways to work with local farmers to address hunger. 🌟 Celebrating Community Collaboration: 40,000 lbs of Salmon Rescued! 🌟 One of BananaBox's current projects is supporting the development of the Onondaga Food Rescue Network (OFRN), a network of volunteers and emergency food providers working to strengthen food recovery in Central New York. Through an extraordinary collaborative effort, alongside the Food Bank of Central New York, TDO (Train Develop Optimize) - the CNY Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center, and Syracuse-Onondaga Food Systems Alliance, we've worked together to recover nearly 40,000 lbs of salmon from LocalCoho, a local farm winding down its operations. This massive recovery was made possible by the incredible volunteers from the Food Bank and OFRN's networks and the logistical masterminds at TDO. In a few weeks, processed filets from this salmon rescue will be ready, and we’re thrilled to be working with the local food bank to distribute this bounty. What makes this effort truly special? OFRN is ensuring some of these high-quality, nutritious filets will find their way to non-traditional food distribution sites— think neighborhood associates in subsidized housing, mutual aid groups, etc— getting healthy, protein-rich food into the hands of those who might not access a typical food pantry. I could not be more proud to be involved with the Onondaga Food Rescue Network and how it creates a more resilient, equitable food system. Efforts like these remind us of the power of community collaboration to meet immediate needs while pushing for a future where food sovereignty is possible for all. Together, we’re turning surplus into sustainability—and scarcity into abundance. 💛🐟 https://lnkd.in/ev9WSEwt #FoodJustice #FoodSovereignty #FoodRescue #Collaboration #SystemsThinking #BananaBoxConsulting #OFRN #CommunityImpact
