Rescue Food. Feed People. Build Community.

About us

Did you know that 24,372 TONNES of food is wasted every year in New Zealand? Kairos Food Rescue is doing something about it! Kairos Food Rescue collects excess food, destined for the bin, from local cafes, restaurants and bulk food suppliers and re-distributes it to the people in our city who need it most. Kairos supplies food to over 60 reputable food banks in Christchurch and are involved with other food rescue and food banks, both locally and nationally. We also operate a Free Store three times a week where everyone is welcome to come and get food - no questions asked.

  • The results are in, and the numbers have been crunched! We are absolutely blown away by the love and support from all of you. When we set out to raise $70K in 7 days, we knew it was a bold goal—but we believed in the power of community and the generosity of people like you. And wow, you did not let us down! Through our Give a little page and additional donations through our website, we’ve raised over… ✨ $57,000… and counting! ✨ From the bottom of our hearts—thank you, thank you, thank you! We couldn’t have done this without each and every one of you. Thank you to all who gave so generously—big and small! You are the reason we can keep doing what we do best. Your donations will directly impact our community, helping us rescue and distribute food to those who need it most. Thank you to everyone who shared our story! You are the best marketing team we could ever ask for. Your passion, loyalty, and dedication mean the world to us. And lastly, thank you to all who believe in us and our mission! You are our whānau. Words cannot express how grateful we are to have a community that backs us, supports us, and stands with us. This campaign was about more than just raising funds—it was about raising awareness of the urgent need for funding and starting a bigger conversation about how we, as a community, can support and sustain organisations doing good—not just in Christchurch, but all across Aotearoa. If you’d like to continue making an impact, you can start giving regularly from as little as $5 a week. Every bit counts! https://lnkd.in/gq2m7vCs

  • Today we had the pleasure of joining RNZ on the morning report to discuss the challenges we’re facing in food rescue and funding. It’s definitely worth a listen if you want to learn more about the current state of food support in communities and get a closer look at what we are all about here at Kairos! A huge thank you to everyone who’s supported us so far! We’re already over 40% of the way to our goal! Let’s keep the momentum going! https://lnkd.in/gDgtUNGc

  • If nothing else, we hope that our "70k in 7 Days" campaign will highlight and bring awareness to the significant need for support for organisations combating food insecurity all over Aotearoa! We cannot continue as we are while trying to meet the growing demand for help in our communities. Check out this article by The Press Christchurch, where they take a deep dive into the issues we are facing at the moment!

  • 🚨Help Keep Kairos Active🚨 As we step into 2025 with hopes and dreams of continuing to provide support for our community, we find ourselves facing a difficult reality. The need for food in Ōtautahi Christchurch is growing every day, and the financial cost of running our services is growing too. In addition to this, we're feeling the pinch from reduced funding. We are now faced with a worrying prospect: we will simply be unable to operate some of our services without further support. That’s why we’re turning to you. We’ve launched a Give-A-Little campaign to raise $70,000 in 7 days to enable us to continue rescuing and supplying food to our community groups, food banks and to those in our city who depend on us. This isn’t simply about numbers or budgets; this is about supporting the people we serve every day—the families, individuals and children who rely on our help to get through tough times. Every day, we see the power of community in action - now we’re asking for your help to continue this vital work. Your contribution, no matter the amount, will directly impact our ability to keep food on the tables of those who need it most. Can you help us keep Kairos Food Rescue active? From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your support. https://lnkd.in/gDgtUNGc

  • A study by Rabobank and Kiwi Harvest revealed that over 100,000 tonnes of perfectly good food is wasted every year in New Zealand, food that could help hundreds of thousands of people! In 2024, we rescued over 840 tonnes of food. While that might seem small compared to what’s wasted, it’s equivalent to the weight of seven Dreamliner airplanes. Our dream is to see the amount of food wasted decrease and amount of food rescued increase. As we look ahead to 2025, we invite you to: 1) Have a think about what you and your household can do to minimise your food waste. 2) Support us in rescuing food and supplying foodbanks to help those in need. We believe we can do even more in 2025! Rescue more food, supply more foodbanks, and feed more people. Are you with us? To help us feed the food banks click the link below! Every dollar Counts! https://lnkd.in/g2G5sbAG Or visit our website for ways you can reduce your food waste: https://lnkd.in/gPeQSCv4 #feedthefoodbanks #foodrescue #foodbanks #kairos #kairosfoodrescue

  • What a fantastic way to wrap up the year at Kairos Free Store!🎄 This past week, we held our Free Store Christmas Feast, sharing an incredible meal with our community, and handed out Christmas parcels to spread a little extra cheer. A special thanks to the team at Chateau on the Park - Christchurch, a DoubleTree by Hilton for cooking up our beautiful, rescued food Christmas meal. Feeding over 170 people is no small feat! And a huge shoutout to our amazing volunteers who helped serve it all out.
