We've been getting to work out in #Ward8! As many of you know, we don't address food deserts because we know that food access is a man-made problem with plenty of man-made solutions available for those who care to fix it. Although Ward 8 has the highest number of #farmers in #ChocolateCity, it is still considered the hardest hit by what we call #FoodApartheid. Since the two wards #EastOfTheRiver can only access produce at two big box stores, #DreamingOutLoud is building a market in #HistoricAnacostia! The significance of building something at the intersection of #MLK and #MarionBarry is not lost on us, but knowing that we will be able to give more market access to #BlackFarmers and #BlackBusinessOwners in the region while giving our community a chance to buy #LocallyGrown organic produce is an honor and a privilege that we don't take lightly. Tell your friends and follow this journey with us all the way to the grand opening!! #LinkInBio #FreshFood #FoodJustice #BlackOwned #HealthIsWealth #HealthyEating #GrowYourOwn #FoodIsMedicine #SmallBusiness #LocallySourced

If you enjoy visiting your local farmers market, have you ever considered why? Maybe it’s seeing fresh fruit displayed under tents of many colors, feeling the just-harvested vegetables in your hands as you make your selection, or something else? For AFT team member Rachel Newcomb, these reasons -and so many more- are part of why she shops at her local market. But truly, the most compelling part to her is the feeling of gathering, nourishment, and community. ☀ Read more: https://bit.ly/3ywsMTa. #FarmersMarketWeek

Behind every vibrant vegetable, every fruit and every fragrant herb, lies the nurturing hands of our small farmers. They don't just grow food; they cultivate connections, fostering a deeper understanding of where our meals come from. Always make a point to visit a farmers' market near you, and connect with the direct producers. #localfood #localfoodmarket #FarmersMarket #VeggieVentures #everydayfarming #SupportLocalGrowers #smallfarmers #smallproducers #whatthefarmerhas

At Nestlé, we’re focused on creating long-term solutions to support stronger community food systems. In the U.S., we recently teamed up with Rid-All, an urban farm in Cleveland, Ohio, to restore a hoop house into a fully functional 42-bed growing space. The hoop house will grow fresh foods such as leafy greens and fruits, and the collaboration will also help create opportunities for local and next-gen farmers in the Cleveland area. Recently, our Food Hub Client Manager, Amy, got to visit Benny Boy Farm and see behind-the-scenes operations in person, as well as meet the chickens and, of course, Benny Boy himself! The small Rougemont farm isn’t just focused on producing superior protein, feeding the community is central to its mission. Whitney, owner and head farmer (and former Farmer Foodshare employee!), dedicates her business to supporting local food access initiatives, and we are grateful to partner with them this month. We share a bigger picture of Benny Boy Farm’s work in the community in our August newsletter, going out later this week! Despite the wettest 18 months since 1836, increasing fertiliser and energy costs; the UK Food Security Index 2024 (published last month) reported that in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, confidence in food supply chain actors to ensure food is safe to eat varied by actor. Respondents were more likely to report confidence in farmers (84%) and shops and supermarkets (81%) and least likely to report confidence in takeaways (54%), and food delivery services (39%). #BackBritishFarming #YourHarvest #UKFarming #BeConfident
#YourHarvest 2024 is here🌾 Over the next few weeks, farmers across the country will be beginning to harvest their crop to produce tasty food for you to eat 🍰🥖🍺 Get involved and share your photos to celebrate the work of our wonderful British farmers🚜🇬🇧 Find out more👉https://ow.ly/YYoy50SfcQq #BackBritishFarming 🇬🇧

🍏 Nurturing Local Food Networks: Seacoast Eat Local 🍏 In our #GivingTuesday series, we’re excited to shine the spotlight on Seacoast Eat Local, which is dedicated to strengthening the connection between local food producers and consumers in the Seacoast region. 🌟 Seacoast Eat Local operates with a powerful mission—to cultivate a thriving food economy by connecting regional food producers directly with consumers, thereby enriching the community's health, economy, and sustainability. Here are the core initiatives they champion: 🍅 Farmers Markets: Hosting both summer and winter markets, Seacoast Eat Local provides platforms for local farmers and producers to sell their goods directly to the community, fostering economic growth and accessibility to fresh, local produce. 💳 SNAP Incentives: By making local food markets accessible to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) recipients and offering incentives that double the value of SNAP dollars spent on local produce, Seacoast Eat Local ensures healthy food is accessible to all, regardless of income. 📚 Seacoast Harvest: Their local food guide, Seacoast Harvest, provides invaluable information on where to find local farms, fisheries, and farmers’ markets, making it easier for consumers to support and connect with local food sources. For those whose livelihoods depend on food production, though, cataclysm is always on the horizon. In this documentary, Ruth Reichl explores with experts how our systems became broken over the postwar decades and, as several participants say, led to most farmers and ranchers barely breaking even while the big companies that process and distribute their products profited. #foodsystems #foodequity #agricultureandfarming | The New York Times
