Today, we’re launching our spring fundraising campaign! Now until May 28th – World Hunger Day – we're calling on our community to help us strengthen marginalized farmers and feed Triangle-area communities. With Earth Day just around the corner, we are thinking especially about small local farms contribute to a healthier world – regenerating farmland, providing safe havens for pollinators, and supporting biodiversity – all while feeding us too. The funds we raise in the next six weeks will support NC farmers, provide nutritious fruits and vegetables for those who need it most, and build a more equitable food system. Join us in stewarding our local foodshed by making a gift today: https://lnkd.in/eFHVnH9Q #farmerfoodshare #stewardyourlocalfoodshed #tillandtend #joinus #donate #give #foodsystem #foodshed #localfarms #localfarmers #foodaccess #earthday #foodsecurity #locallygrown #localfood #pollinators #worldhungerday

Peak harvest season for tomatoes may be from mid-July to mid-September, but high tunnels help extend the season as much as 4 months. First-of-the-season tomatoes from several of our farmers are brightening up the food hub these days. Pictured here are some tomato varietals we’ve had at the Food Hub this year Fishel's Organics (slide 1), GreenTown Farms (slide 2), and Lee's Produce NC (slide 3-5) 🍅💚 These vine-ripened, vitamin-rich fruits come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors. There are more than 10,000 varieties of tomato world-wide, heirloom as well as hybrid. Cherokee Purple, Red Brandywine, Sun Gold, and Big Beef, among others, are commonly grown here. More than 1 million pounds of tomatoes are grown in North Carolina each year (the majority of which are grown in Western NC and the Piedmont!), placing our state 7th in the nation in tomato production. Click the link below for a Mediterranean Tomato Feta Salad recipe, a fitting, herby combo to get you in on all the spring tomato goodness: https://lnkd.in/epxfC8J9 #tomato #tomatotomato #spring #hightunnel #tunnelgrown #locallygrown #vineripe #northcarolina #localfarmers #eatlocal #produce #organic #leesproduce #fishelsorganics #greentown

This year, we launched Giving Circles, an initiative designed to recognize contributions from our supporters, connect them even more to our work, and allow us to express our sincere gratitude. 🫶 If you’ve made a contribution in the past year, you are already a Friend of the Foodshare! Thank you! And, when you join or renew membership in a Giving Circle this season, you have the chance to connect even more deeply with our mission and cultivate relationships with other supporters who share your passion for creating a more equitable food system. 🤝 Learn more about our two levels of Giving Circles – Community Cultivators & Harvest Heroes – and other giving opportunities at Farmer Foodshare to see firsthand the impact of your generosity by visiting our website below: https://lnkd.in/eFHVnH9Q 👏 Thank you for being such an important part of our community at whatever level of giving or engagement is possible for YOU. We couldn’t do this without you, and we’re excited to continue this journey together. #farmerfoodshare #friendsofthefoodshare #givingcircles #harvestheroes #communitycultivators #give #joinus #community #foodsecurity #foodaccess #foodjustice #localfarmers #supportlocalfarmers #eatlocal #localfood #nonprofit #foodhub

Rouse Brothers Produce, a new farm in our network, has supplied us with the most beautiful rapini. Bunches of this spring veggie arrived at our Food Hub on Monday, freshly picked just earlier that morning. Rouse Brothers Produce is an organic farm in Rose Hill, growing a mix of vegetables including bunched beets, collards, kale, and other seasonal items. Rapini cooks up fabulously, and we're excited to toss it into as many dishes as we can while it's here! We shared a simple recipe for Pasta Shells with Rapini & Italian -- made with other locally sourced ingredients from Firsthand Foods , Lee's Produce NC, and Fresh-Pik. Check it out below: https://lnkd.in/eH_scjMd #rapini #broccoliraab #rousebrothersproduce #locallygrown #recipe #spring #seasonal #inseason #farmerfoodshare #foodhub

Food box delivery at The Help Center NC! The Help Center operates in a handful of counties in north-central NC, and their Durham operation is located just up the road from us at CenterWell Senior Primary Care on N. Roxboro St. Established in 2016 by Twanna Joyner Jones, The Help Center serves the community through a variety of supports, and we’re glad to assist them in bringing fresh, local food to those who need it most! Here’s a look at our food box drop off earlier this month. What a great team! Making fresh, local food accessible for all is possible through support from our community.
