🌍 My insights from the Future Food Tech event in London last week 🌍 Even though I couldn’t be there in person to see -and taste!- innovations, the virtual sessions at #FFT provided valuable insights. Here are my top highlights: 🌱 Innovation & Functionality: AI is transforming plant-based ingredient design, optimising textures and nutrients. NotCo is tackling challenges like sugar reduction using AI, while molecular farming is emerging as the next big thing. This reminds me of SYNOVANCE , a French startup and EIC Accelerator champions using engineered microorganisms to convert biomass into sustainable dyes—similar to how molecular farming is reshaping food ingredients. Very inspiring, guys! 🍽 "Taste is King, Functionality is Queen": Delivering both is key. Consumers embrace plant-based options when taste and quality align. With this in mind, companies like Melt & Marble and Savor are using precision fermentation to replicate animal fats, while Those Vegan Cowboys announced their animal-free casein tastes and performes even better than traditional casein. 🫱🏻🫲🏽 Collaboration and meaningful partnerships are driving rapid innovation. At REWE Group they are integrating alternative ingredients like Planet A Foods' ChoViva into their products with excellent consumer acceptance results, proving that large company-startup collaboration fuels sustainable progress and commercial success. 🧠 Regulatory Challenges: The regulatory landscape, especially for cultivated meat and alternative proteins, needs to catch up. The Netherlands is leading with regulatory sandboxes and authorised, controlled consumer tastings, like those of Mosa Meat , but broader harmonisation is essential, particularly in the EU. 👌 Healthier Choices & Good Processing: Reformulating everyday products to reduce sugars and increase nutrient density is at the forefront. The Agrifoodtech Challenge 2024 of Valle del Cauca celebrates its three winners! Last friday, the Gobernación del Valle del Cauca has announced the winners of the #AgrifoodtechChallenge during the Demo Day at the Xpanz event. The challenge, executed by Reddi Colombia and Eatable Adventures, has been designed to drive innovation in the region's agrifood sector. These are the projects transforming the future of food in Valle del Cauca: - Tecde.ai (TechStars '24): This solver uses artificial intelligence to reduce food waste at home. Its innovative system detects the ripeness of food in refrigerators, alerting consumers to consume it before it’s too late. - Global Meals SAS BIC: With a sustainable vision, this startup transforms rice bran into functional and indulgent foods like bread, soups, beverages, and snacks. Their products not only offer nutritional benefits but also upcycle this agricultural byproduct. - Universidad del Valle (CO): Their research on natural sweeteners like tagatose in baked goods is opening doors to healthier options without compromising taste or texture. “The Agrifoodtech Challenge has been a key platform for these innovative projects to make a significant impact on the agrifood market,” highlighted Sergio Zúñiga Bohórquez, Regional VP Latam of Eatable Adventures.
