The weather is hot and the market for senior marketing roles is hotting up too. We're hiring a Chief Growth Officer (not a Chief Marketing Officer) for a B2C scaleup. What do we expect from a CGO vs a CMO? 4 key differences.... 1. Commerciality. A deep understanding of how different levers can be pulled to drive commercial performance. How does increasing LTV by 20% translate into profitability, runway and allowable CAC? They need to be best friends with the CFO and communicate the commercial strategy clearly to the Board. Be able to clearly demonstrate that if we put X in and we'll get 5X out. 2.Breadth. The CGO role covers much more than a typical CMO. We'd expect them to chase growth wherever it was - salesforce efficiency, customer service execution, conversion, pricing, supply chain optimisation - areas that are well beyond traditional 'marketing'. CGO's share more in common with a General Manager than they do with a traditional CMO. 3. Product experience. Product needs to evolve to drive conversion, to improve LTV, to reach new audiences and to sell in new channels. We expect a CGO to be continually looking at how the holistic product experience can improve, and what adjacent markets or channels we should be going after. We also expect a deep understanding of how product and engineering teams work. 4. Brand. Expectations on brand and creative experience can be lower for a CGO than a CMO. We expect them to understand the strategic importance of brand, how it relates to the P/L (e.g. how does brand awareness correlate to sales?), and be able to identify what good looks like, but we don't expect them to be experts. They need to know when to call in an expert and what expert, but not to be that person. ... now I know that CMOs should have these skills, but the reality is many don't! We're hiring a CGO for a London-based DTC scaleup. We're helping them accelerate their commercial performance, evolve their brand and launch in new verticals.
