I am excited to share another story I wrote for MTSU News! Two Middle Tennessee State University faculty members in the Department of Health and Human Performance have been recognized with grants to help continue funding their efforts to enhance in- and out-of-classroom opportunities for their students. Kathryn Blankenship and Karen Davis, associate professors in the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, or SLPA, program, run the SLPA Student Ambassador Program, which gives SLPA majors the opportunity to attend recruiting events and serve as tutors and mentors for their peers in beginning SLPA courses. As part of its efforts to improve access to care, the University of Maine at Augusta officially opened an expanded dental education clinic in its Lewiston Center this month, doubling its capacity to educate in-demand dental health care professionals and serve the community. The Delta Dental Oral Health Center, which was named in recognition of a grant from Northeast Delta Dental that enabled the expansion, complements dental education facilities at UMA’s Bangor campus. Between the two sites, UMA can now annually train 30 dental assisting students and 30 expanded functions dental assisting students, who also provide free and low-cost preventative and basic restorative services to eligible Mainers including low-income children and Veterans. UMA is the state’s leading provider of practice-ready allied dental health professionals with 100% job placement rate for its graduates — 95% of whom stay in the state.
