👩🏫 More than 100 new teachers have been placed in classrooms in 34 Maine school districts over the past three years through an innovative teacher residency led by the University of Southern Maine. The Maine Teacher Residency program matches participants to paid opportunities as ed techs, conditionally or emergency certified teachers, or co-teachers in Maine schools, and also provides them advising, mentoring and stipends for tuition at University of Maine System (UMS) universities and private colleges in the state. "For districts struggling with staffing shortages, this program serves as a crucial pipeline for developing and retaining high-quality educators," Ben Harris, a principal in RSU 23, who said his school is fully staffed for the first time since the pandemic in part to this program, told The Maine Monitor/Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting. The grow-your-own initiative was initially funded with Congressionally Directed Spending secured in 2022 by U.S. Senator Susan Collins with the support of Senator Angus S. King, Jr. The 131st Maine Legislature provided an appropriation to continue the residency through 2025-26 school year and state legislation is currently pending to fund the program after that. The University of Maine System (UMS) is the state’s largest producer of classroom-ready teachers, having awarded nearly 4,300 education degrees or certificates in the past five years. Since 2015, eight of Maine’s top teachers have been our alumni, including the current Maine Teacher of the Year, Becky Hallowell, a graduate of both the University of Maine at Farmington and USM. The state of the University of Maine System (UMS) is STRONG and innovative, despite the considerable uncertainty we are facing. That was Chancellor Malloy's message to a Joint Convention of the Maine Legislature this week. In his first in-person address to the full Legislature since becoming Chancellor in 2019, Malloy shared that his personal experience overcoming severe learning and physical disabilities impressed upon him the importance of public education and meeting students where they are. And that's just what we're doing.
