8 of the 10 world’s most sustainable cities are in Nordic Countries. The 2023 Global Destination Sustainability Index (link at: https://lnkd.in/djZfyyDf) ranks cities across 69 criteria to come up with the scoring. It’s a useful list for anyone choosing a destination to visit, move to or to hold a conference. 🏢 There are no US cities in the top 40 list, nor Chinese cities. A good signal will be when the 2 top emitters start to feature in this list. 🏤 The region with the largest number of cities in the top 40 is Europe with 17 (43%). 🏛️ Gothenberg, Sweden is number 1 on the list. I love this benchmarking tool! 📊 Once you have the data, you need to be able to compare it live. 🔄 When you can clearly see where others are doing better, you can focus your efforts there. 🎯 This example is LAUNDRY. 🧺 The huge variations in emissions will significantly impact the PRPN. If your hotel has higher emissions from laundry than your competitors, find out why. How can you change your linen management process to make it more sustainable? 🌱 Use the most modern energy- and water-efficient laundry possible, not just the cheapest. Belize is proud to be hosting the 1st Annual World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards at the Cahal Pech Archaeological Site on September 27, 2024. The Belize Tourism Board invites all eligible stakeholders and businesses to enter for a chance to be victorious in one of 21 categories pertaining to sustainability. All categories can be found below, however, there are three categories that are open to Belize Only. Those three categories are: 1. Leading Sustainable Community Engagement Programme Acknowledges initiatives that excel in fostering inclusive participation, empowering communities, and promoting sustainable development practices, driving positive social change and resilience globally. Only individuals and organisations located in Belize are eligible to enter this category. 2. Leading Sustainable Cultural Heritage Project Celebrates initiatives that safeguard and promote cultural heritage through sustainable conservation practices, fostering community engagement and preserving cultural identity for future generations. Only individuals and organisations located in Belize are eligible to enter this category. 3. Leading Sustainable Marine Conservation Initiative Recognises outstanding efforts dedicated to preserving and restoring marine ecosystems, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and fostering community engagement to ensure the health and resilience of our oceans. My recent research highlights the pain point of the lack of standardisation of the industry's sustainability metrics, when it compares the sustainability reporting of various hotel operators 💔 It does make the benchmarking harder, but more importantly, it makes the industrial collaboration harder when each is chasing their own vision! Bristol has been crowned the highest-ranked English city for sustainability in a global survey. Climbing from 63rd to 51st place worldwide, Bristol is setting a shining example of how destinations can lead the way in eco-friendly tourism. Sustainability drives everything in the West of England, putting the region at the forefront of the UK’s journey to net zero. Since 2005, carbon emissions have dropped significantly, with the West emitting 18% less CO2 per person than the national average in 2020. Australia By Nature's - Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard. You know those moments when you are waiting for an exam/test result and then the letter arrives/email pops up in your inbox. The butterflies were real today and that's because this email really means a lot to us. We value sustainability in our business so highly and strive to do everything we can to continuously improve. Thanks to support from Destination NSW, we took Ecotourism Australia's Strive 4 Sustainability scorecard for a snapshot of where we are up to on our sustainability journey, by assessing our practices across the four pillars of sustainability: sustainable management, environmental impacts, cultural impacts and socio-economic impacts. As we opened the email, we had a big sigh of relief to see our score of 81%. Not only is the program comprehensive, but so too is the feedback which we look forward to using to grow our score even higher next year. Across the 81% overall score, this included the following breakdowns which have highlighted to us where we are progressing well and where we need to dig deeper and improve: 🌿 Environmental Impacts - 89% 🌿 Sustainable Management - 86% 🌿 Cultural Impacts - 88% 🌿 Socio-economic impacts - 63% Thank you Ecotourism Australia and Destination NSW for providing this fantastic learning journey.
