Have you ever stood on a construction site and felt the weight of the air, thick with diesel exhaust from machinery? I remember the day our team decided to tackle this head-on by transitioning to low-emission equipment. Initially, it seemed daunting—both the task and the potential impact on our budget. But then, we discovered the tangible benefits. Switching to electric and hybrid machinery was our game-changer. These machines not only reduced our carbon footprint but also improved on-site air quality significantly. The transition started with a simple audit of our existing fleet, identifying high emission culprits. We then explored leasing options for electric diggers and hybrids, which allowed us to manage costs effectively. Interestingly, even the workers reported feeling healthier and more energetic, and the immediate neighborhood appreciated the quieter operations. The process was gradual, but by setting clear targets and involving the team in selecting equipment, we managed a smooth transition. Have you considered conducting an emissions audit on your site? It could be the first step towards a cleaner, more sustainable work environment. What changes could you make today to breathe easier tomorrow? https://lnkd.in/dgciaYCn

To achieve a sustainable world, no leader can stand alone. In a recent presentation at the Future of Electrification 2024 conference, Luca Vezzadini, Application Engineer at ZIVAN, drove this point home through the lens of a unique topic: engineering vision. 💡 A greener, smarter future lies at the intersection of innovation and sustainability, but some questions need to be addressed first. Where are we going with electrification, and how do we get there? These questions are of particular interest for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in off-road machinery. As electrification sees slower adoption in these sectors, the principles behind engineering vision offer profound insights into the tangible benefits of aligning with sustainability initiatives. At PACE we have made progress towards more sustainable operations, however we acknowledge our Scope 1 and 2 emissions remain high compared with other industries. In the coming years, we will continue to develop and prioritise our roadmap to net zero. In 2023 our scope 1 & 2 emissions reduced by 13% year-on-year, and by 17% year-on-year in terms of our carbon intensity metric (tCO2e per £million revenue). This indicates that although our business is growing, our emissions are not. 2023 was a year of small, medium and large actions aimed at reducing our emissions. These included integrating the EDL Lymington business into PACE and not continuing to lease the Lymington site, reducing and/or replacing ageing CNC equipment, replacing ageing heat treatment ovens with a modern unit, continuing to replace fluorescent lighting with LED lighting within the factory, optimising heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and upgrading some electrical systems to improve efficiency. 2024 will see the introduction of a new electric kiln (as previously reported), an assessment of the impact of solar panels, assessing heat recovery options, improving insulation, as well as the ongoing maintenance and discipline regarding efficiency such as checking airlines for leaks and keeping doors and curtains closed during winter. Our focused efforts in 2023 combined with the support of our employees, has enabled us to make great progress in continuing to understand and manage our CO2 emissions and we look forward to continuing this in 2024 and beyond. As sustainability goals become a focal point for businesses, the role of electric equipment in reducing emissions is undeniable. The recent discussions around charging solutions highlight key questions faced by managers, especially in industries reliant on heavy machinery. Our partnerships and pilots with leading OEMs in the construction industry showcase the practicality and impact of electric solutions. At the construction site of our new gigafactory, we piloted a mobile battery unit that efficiently charged Komatsu’s 20-ton electric excavator, enabling it to work for 8 hours without interruption. This not only reduces fuel consumption but also significantly cuts down emissions. Our Moxion MP-75 mobile battery, designed to replace diesel generators, is a game-changer in providing clean and reliable power. With 75kW of power and over 600kWh of energy, it offers a sustainable alternative without compromising performance.
