Dr. Breen, an emergency physician, tragically died by suicide early in the pandemic, highlighting the urgent need to address burnout and mental health challenges among healthcare workers. The Lorna Breen Act provides critical resources to tackle burnout and improve well-being. This law not only supports healthcare workers but also strengthens the care they provide to all of us. This year, the Act must be reauthorized by Congress to continue its vital work. Hospital closures harm our local communities and reduce our access to health care. They put our own individual health and well-being at risk, particularly pregnant and parenting families. They also threaten our ability to cope with emergencies such as pandemics and natural disasters. Local communities should play a role in developing ways to ensure that people will still receive the hospital-based care we need, particularly in a sudden emergency like a heart attack, stroke, mental health crisis, childbirth or life-threatening injury. The New York State Legislature passed the Local Input in Community Healthcare Act (S.8843A/A.1633B last spring. This bill will: improve public notice and community involvement when hospitals propose to close entirely or shut units like maternity, emergency or mental health services, strengthen government oversight of proposed closures and ensure that a Health Equity Impact Assessment is done, to inform state regulators. 📢 Call for evidence 📢 The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is reviewing the duty of candour and seeking feedback on its clarity and the extent to which it is understood, honoured, monitored and enforced. The organisational duty of candour was introduced in November 2014, following the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust public inquiry. It requires NHS trusts, and all other health and social care providers registered with the Care Quality Commission, to be open and honest with patients and families when something goes wrong that appears to have caused or could lead to moderate harm or worse in the future (known as a ‘notifiable safety incident’). DHSC is concerned about reports that the duty of candour is not always complied with. The NIA is hosting a virtual workshop called "The Unwinding: The Impact of Public Health Emergency Policies on Labor, Housing, and Health" on Monday, May 6, and Monday, May 20. Background on the workshop: The workshop will explore the effects of COVID-19 era social support policies with the goal of asking what can be learned from their creation and conclusion. On Monday, May 6, 2024, presenters will review the policies dominating health care coverage and delivery from declaration of the Public Health Emergency until phase out. Sessions will feature presentations and discussions on Medicaid expansion, suspension of Medicaid redeterminations, administering care through telehealth, and changes to care consumption. The workshop will continue on Monday, May 20, 2024, to discuss income and labor policies, including family support, paid sick leave, and telework. It will also feature housing policies, such as eviction moratoria and emergency rental assistance.
